Today we’d like to introduce you to Zeneakia Ilo.
Zeneakia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a strong interest in beauty and esthetics. I set a goal of opening a medspa about ten years ago. While living in Tupelo, Mississippi, I decided to enroll in a nine-month esthetics course in Birmingham, Alabama at the Aveda Institute. I traveled 2.5 hours each way Tuesday through Saturday for the duration of the program. Shortly after I completed this program, we transitioned from Mississippi back to the great state of Texas. As soon as I returned to Houston, I began my quest to find the perfect location to open my business. I finally found a spot that felt like “home” and so my story begins…… House of Zen Medspa is a place where you can get lavish treatment facials, waxing, botox, fillers, and so much more while receiving great customer service. I take pride in giving my clients the ultimate luxury experience. I like to consider myself a lifelong learner. I love to learn new techniques and procedures to use in the treatment room, and ways to better educate my clients on the appropriate skincare products as well. I am a Texas Southern University Alumni and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It absolutely has NOT been a smooth road. I encountered several obstacles while enrolled in an esthetician school. I was away from my family for a large part of the day. I actually got up at 5:30 am each morning, left my house by 6:15 in order to be present for class by 9:00 A.M. I always left early to allow for any unexpected incident such as traffic, weather, etc., I had two small children that were being cared for by a nanny that worked in our home while I was away. My children often cried because they missed me. It was hard for me as a mother to witness my children sad and unhappy because I was away from them on such a consistent basis. It is solely because of my determination, perseverance, and ‘sticktoitiveness’ that I never gave up.
Please tell us about House of Zen Medspa.
House of Zen Medspa is a medspa specializing in luxury treatment facials. I am the lead medical esthetician. I specialize in treating skin of color, hyperpigmentation, acne, and anti-aging, and corrective chemical peels. House of Zen is an extension of myself. It makes me proud to see my business bear my name and thrive in my respective community. I’m also very proud of the fact that my husband has been, and continues to be my rock throughout this entire process.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not do anything differently. I have learned so many valuable lessons throughout this entire process. I am grateful for all that I experienced because it made me more business savvy. Each time that I encountered hardship or a stumbling block, I always got back up and fought harder to accomplish my dreams and goals.
