Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Glover.
Donna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am born and raised in Houston. After a brief stint at the University of Oklahoma, I made my way back to Prairie View A&M University and graduated from there with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science – Mother’s Day 1998. Prairie View taught me a lot about striving for excellence for not only myself but for others like me. As I worked in the telecommunications field in Chicago, I often felt something lacking – I guess that was a direct line to helping people – especially young people. Although I would host and participate in career and college fairs – that was not enough. I also felt the need to give back to my alma mater, PVAMU – in multiple ways. I studied other large universities and often strategized ways to get my alma mater what they needed as well as programs that would be enhancements. 20 years ago when I saw the correlation between sports and university, alumni/community giving and growth – I decided to make that my focus. My company, D.G. Sports and Entertainment, works to create fun and profitable events/weekends around HBCUs sporting games that engage alumni and bring awareness to the schools. HBCUs are Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth road? Not necessarily. Sports is still a man’s game. It is hard to break into the industry as a woman, beautiful woman, black woman – especially a beautiful black woman. Imagine not only working double hard, but triple hard to convince someone you know what you are talking about, even with a proven record. In addition, it can be challenging for alumni and universities to see big pictures when they have had limited views for so long. My biggest challenge is running into people who do not want to take risks and think out of the box.
DG Sports and Entertainment – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
In addition to a BS in Computer Science, I hold a MBA from DePaul University (Chicago) and Masters of Education from the University of St. Thomas (Houston) that allows me and the company to work from various vantage points. D.G. Sports and Entertainment works to create fun and profitable events/weekends around HBCUs sporting games that engage alumni and bring awareness to the schools. In the past we have created activity-filled weekends for the memorable and local Labor Day Classic, hosted events around town and domestically (in Atlanta, Chicago, Washington DC, and Nashville) for HBCU ticket holders, presented receptions and mixers for sporting fans, worked logistics with ESPN for select bowl games,
As a company, I am proud that we get to work with and help HBCUs. What sets us apart from others? I think that we are small enough to foresee and handle nuances that others cannot and fluid/flexible enough to put the right people and combinations in place to make successful events.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
So far, the proudest moment of my career was handling logistics for ESPN HBCU bowl games. I able to use my talents and skills to work on a national stage.
