Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Wilson.
Brandon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I first learned woodworking skills from my grandfather during my childhood and inherited my his love of woodworking. The passion for woodworking was always there and followed me throughout my childhood into adulthood. I began doing small “handy man” projects for friends and family while acquiring tools of my own along the way. I always knew I wanted carpentry to be a part of my life, but wasn’t sure in of the depth and capacity. The birth of Wilson Custom Carpentry came around 2016 after I returned to the US from an expatriate assignment in West Africa. I was laid-off from my then employer due to the decline in the oil & gas industry and began to do woodworking full-time. I designed and built a couple of closet & cabinet projects, and then I began to gain more interest from that point on.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has definitely been a challenging road along the way; however, I knew this was a real passion when those obstacles would only increase my desire to do woodworking. When I started I didn’t have the best tools to do jobs, which increased lead times and the amount of work I had to put into each project. It was frustrating at times but I feel as if I had to go through that process to learn more and deepen my appreciation for the craft. Another struggle has been working in a small garage space so producing projects takes a bit longer due to size restrictions. Also, finishing projects are a bit of a struggle sometimes because of the climate here in Houston. The humidity is not always finish friendly.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Wilson Custom Carpentry – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Wilson Custom Carpentry is a unique brand/business. We specialize in the design, build, and installation of custom closets, cabinetry, and furniture. We also design and build other custom “art” items (gift boxes, cutting boards, bow ties, etc.). I’m most proud of the support and love that I’ve gotten from my clients. After completing a project and I get “Wow, You did this by hand?” it makes the time and effort all worth it. I’m proud of the challenges, growth, and success that we’ve experienced in just four years of business. What sets us apart from others is that the customer gets to be a part of the process from inception to installation. I take customers on a journey through the project, the good and the bad. So at the end of the project, they have a piece they can talk about with some knowledge of how it was created.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Planning to move into a bigger shop where I can streamline production and mitigate some of the challenges that exist with climate and size. Continuing to be active in woodworking societies and organizations to give back to the industry and inspire future woodworkers. Also, just continuing to build our brand so it can be a proud staple of my family legacy.
