Meet Jamaal Rutherford of GROW (Get Rich Off Wisdom) in SW Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal Rutherford.

Jamaal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I attended Prairie View A&M University, where I received my Bachelors in Accounting and Masters in Business Administration. As a kid, I took a real interest in mental math problems, numbers, and making my own money. In middle school, I was the student that sold candy and chips. In high school, I would wash cars and mow lawns. As an adult, I would pick up any legal job that paid the right dollar amount for the task.

Growing older and hearing about budgeting, saving, and investing from mentors made me take an interest in personal finance. Reading honestly became more of a hobby after college, as I am sure for most students. Now, I am at the point of life where every penny that I earn has a job with a plan to most likely benefit me for the future.

My journey started by managing my own funds and having small discussions with mentors, friends, and family. Then, it led to explaining small money budgeting with the kids from my non-profit (Strivenation). Now, my financial lectures and speeches have become more public to more friends and even strangers in which I host one on one meetings to help others manage money and achieve their financial goals by adjusting their habits.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like many businesses, the biggest obstacle is getting started because you are now inputting a new brand into the world. The purpose of my business does not usually come from an African American male like myself. Better yet, it’s not every day that someone opens up a business discussing finances unless it is tax-related. When it comes to finances, you will most find women leading the discussion from a business standpoint. Other than that, the road has been smooth. JBVisuals created my website for me and the support from people that have seen my business has been tremendous.

We’d love to hear more about the company.
My financial company is called GROW, which stands for getting Rich Off Wisdom. We specialize in creating budgetary plans based on your streams of income to help you achieve goals such as getting out of debt, beginner investing, establishing retirement planning, raising credit scores, etc. Clients will tell you that their first thought of budgeting is not spending money on anything outside of your bills, but we do things a little differently here. We come up with creative ways for you have to enjoy the fruit of your labor and accomplish your financial goals at the same time. As crazy as this sounds, our purpose is more about influence than money because I am helping people grasp one of the most important concepts in life that is never taught in school.

What were you like growing up?
I have always had an interest in sports and finance. I was the student that was very determined to make good grades and stay on the honor roll or dean’s list. Being very active in any community I grew up in felt like a must for me. Giving back is more important than receiving.
