Today we’d like to introduce you to George Adesina, MD, MSPH
Hi Dr. Adesina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a General Adult Cardiologist with Kelsey Seybold Clinic. I first got interested in medicine after being a patient myself. I was sick often as a kid and always was amazed with the power physicians held. To help someone go from feeling at their lowest and worst to fixing them back to normal was something very special to witness. In fact, it remains my favorite part of my job. As my interest in medicine matured, I quickly noticed the lack of diversity in many fields of medicine. From then on it became my mission to be an advocate for the underrepresented and underprivileged.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My journey to being a physician was anything but smooth. It took a total of 15 years to be where I am today. I bombed the MCAT on my first attempt. I was told by many advisors to give up and I thought my dreams of being a doctor were over. So, I decided to get my master’s in public health instead. But my desire to become a doctor never faded. After recovering from my initial failure, I tried again and got into every medical school I applied to. I also became chief clinic resident during residency and chief fellow during my cardiovascular fellowship. I might not be the smartest, but I will always be the hardest working and most dedicated.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I see adults with various cardiovascular diseases. My philosophy is that the foundation to good medical care is the physician-patient relationship. My patient care goals are what I call the 3 C’s: compassion, communication, and collaboration. I aim to treat patients as if they were my own family, communicate in a personable manner, and approach each medical decision as a collaboration with equal partnership. I want each patient to walk away from any encounter with me feeling empowered to play an active role in their healthcare.
What are your plans for the future?
I will continue to find a balance between being a dedicated physician while being a devoted father and husband. That’s something I have yet to master. I have also discovered my love of public speaking. In the future, I would love to do more speaking engagements in addition to being a medical correspondent. I aspire to educate the public about cardiovascular disease especially how to prevent them. Watch out Dr. Oz!
