Hi Devon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, my name is Devon Kibble, I am 25 years old and I am the owner of Great Divide Candle Co. My business was definitely a ‘Quarantine Project’. I’m a Gemini. I’m a very curious and strong minded person and I’ve always had a love and a passion for candles. Anytime I would be out shopping and I saw candles, I would always stop to smell and mostly likely, buy. I constantly have new ideas that run through my head, but this particular day in early March of 2020, I was on the phone with a friend of mines & I asked him, “What if I started making candles?” That day, my entire life and thought process changed. I researched for months, watched what seemed like hundreds of YouTube videos, gathering all the information that I possible could. I didn’t have a clue as to what exactly was going to happen, I just knew it was something that I wanted to do. I was doing everything 100% on my own, and all of the money used to jumpstart my business was coming out of my pocket. Every time I got paid from my job, I would put money aside for new candle supplies and before I knew it, as the Summer crept in, I was ready. I had a full garage of candle making supplies. I launched my website August 28th of 2020 and within hours, I was completely sold out of EVERYTHING! I was shocked; I was in disbelief, but I was also very proud. I set my mind to do something, I pushed myself to just do it and I DID!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
For the most part it has been smooth, but it can definitely get stressful at times. One struggle that I dealt with was having things break on you at the most inconvenient times. Like shortly after I launched, my laptop fell off of my bed. It still worked, there was just damage on the screen, so I couldn’t see anything. At that time, I couldn’t afford to just go out and get a new one, so for like two or three months I had to use an HDMI cable to connect from the laptop to my TV just to be able to fulfill orders coming in.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in premium, handmade, crackling wooden wick candles and wax melts, made with with 100% soy wax. All of my candles and melts are poured in very small batches with the finest essential and fragrance oils to ensure the best quality possible. I also make candles for every season! So just recently I had a Winter collection and customers are still asking me to restock my best seller, Cashmere Plum, but now I am working on Spring scents. They will be released sometime in March. The thing that I’m the proudest of, is that I took my vision and kind of brought it to life. Something that once started as an idea, is now here in front of me. My candles are like my babies.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That I am allergic to pineapples. Unfortunate, yes, I know.
