Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Booker.
Hi Kathleen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m first-generation Nigerian-American, meaning I’m the first (along with two siblings) that were born in the U.S. within our family. My parents moved to the US in their 20’s to get their education. They’ve always been advocates of getting a higher education for me and my siblings. However, they were very specific on what type of education we should obtain. This included doctor, engineer, or anything in the healthcare industry that represented a certain “status.” In high school, I was always rearranging furniture in my room around every few months. I envisioned myself being an interior designer and even talked to my mom about that career. She said, “oh, that’s nice but make that a hobby.” I eventually decided to pursue nursing (lesser years of schooling than a doctor) to satisfy my parent’s wishes. Immediately in my last year, I knew working as a bedside nurse wasn’t something I would want to do forever.
After one year of nursing, my dad asked, “when are you going to work on your graduate degree?” At that time, I knew I was going to pursue something in the nursing field that was outside of patient care but didn’t know what. I figured it out very quickly as the bar was definitely set by my dad to go higher in my education. I completed my MBA and Master of Science in Nursing Administration. With this, my career led me into Healthcare Technology, which I enjoy. I’ve consulted in the field and also worked in a management position. During this time, I’ve purchased three homes and sold 2. I would go house hunting for fun with my mom just to see what new construction homes were developing in different neighborhoods. I’ve even helped some friends find their first home.
After my experience in consulting in the IT healthcare industry, the desire to be an entrepreneur grew. I didn’t feel like I worked for what I was passionate about. COVID came and changed a lot in 2020. I spent a lot of time watching Netflix and surfing the web of upcoming developments in the Houston area while I was living in Georgia. I witnessed many people taking risks to starting new businesses and doing something that they enjoyed – turned into career. All of a sudden, I realized I can work on my real estate license because that was something I enjoyed and never felt like work when it came to helping friends and hunting around. Also, I had plans to move back to Houston soon.
Fast forward, I was licensed by 12/2020 and moved back to Houston. I started my real estate career part-time early this year 2021 and have continued my full-time role in the IT healthcare industry. My journey has showed how your path still brings you to what gives you passion, joy, and satisfaction. Parents, society, and sometimes other external forces can make you feel like you’re in a box. It may seem like the unthinkable in your world, but I believe in going after what truly makes you happy and of course, can pay your bills… but your gifts will make room for you. This is just the beginning and my journey to building a successful career in real estate that can one day leave a legacy for the next generation in my family.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No. I’m introverted and branching out to put myself out there… not knowing what family or friends would think about this new venture was nerve-wrecking for me. After getting past that, the hurdle has been making time to continue a full-time job and put in more time in real estate. Even though I enjoy the work, the energy that gets drained from a full-time job leaves me with little left at times for real estate. I’ve been able to push through it with motivation and encouragement from those close to me. Also, coming into an industry with a lot of established agents and clientele has made me consider what I can do to make me stand out as the “new kid on the block.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed real estate agent. I help people find a property for lease, buy, and investment. I believe that being in real estate is not about being a salesperson. It is about helping others fulfill their dreams and set a foundation for their future. This begins with listening with intent to your needs and wants. Whether you’re interested in buying, selling, or renting, I can help clients on their journey. I uphold honesty and integrity to the fullest. I’m an effective communicator and will provide you full transparency throughout the process.
I’m most proud of being myself. I’m not looking to make a sale out of necessity. I have a multi-career and real estate is what I truly enjoy doing. My biggest desire is to see people win and get what they desire the most for their families, themselves, and future.
I look at bringing clients the total package, not just the home. Do you work out? Do you get your nails done? Do you like to hang out with friends? I will work to present you with options that are tailored to your needs and wants. Everyone wants someone to listen and understand their needs. A great agent will not only listen but interpret those wants to present the package that’s right to you.
In addition, if you’re interested in relocating to the Houston area, Baytown is a growing area to keep on your radar. Investors and those wanting to get property in an area that isn’t congested yet, it’s the place to be.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I absolutely loved playing video games (Nintendo, SuperNintendo, Nintendo 64, etc.) Also, I was always doing my friends’ hair and switching up my own hairstyles frequently. I’ve always been detail-oriented, I researched everything before making decisions, highly driven, self-motivated, introverted, visionary, and a planner – planner – planner!
