Meet Lorena Turner of Lorena Jean Photography in Fulshear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorena Turner.

Lorena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated from Texas A&M Corpus Christi in 2005 with a degree in psychology. I worked in various fields from chemical sales to retail to teaching and academic advising. When I had my son in 2011, I struggled with giving up my career in academics to become a stay at home mom. I knew I wanted to be a stay at home mom but, giving up a part of my independence was a big internal struggle. I picked up my first DSLR camera in 2011 as a hobby and a way to document my son who seemed to be growing so fast (as most children do).

I fell in love with photography and quickly found myself reading books upon books and researching all things photography related. It became a somewhat obsession. As I became more knowledgeable, my photography improved. Friends and family noticed and soon started hiring me for family and child photography. I fell in love with not just the art of photography but having a “thing” of my own. My hobby grew into my passion. As time went on, I found myself wanting to specialize in what made me the happiest: newborns. Fast forward 6 years and here I am doing what I love doing. I always say it’s a dream job and as cliché as it sounds….IT IS! Having families trust me with their babies is such an honor. I feel so lucky to have fallen into photography.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I wish I could say it was easy and came naturally but it didn’t! I’ve had to learn everything from newborn posing and safety to lighting (studio and natural light) to editing in a style that is unique and consistent. I’m a work in progress and always willing to learn more. The hardest part for me is definitely the daily business struggles. There is so much more that goes into this than just taking pictures. Picture taking is the fun (and easy) part. Website maintenance, SEO, client communication, taxes…. all that business stuff is the pits but, absolutely necessary! I just keep telling myself that if it was easy, it wouldn’t be worth it. And it is worth it.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Lorena Jean Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I offer a variety of services ranging from maternity to family photography but, my newborn photography is probably what I’m most known for. Families from all over the Houston area bring me their precious little ones (usually within the first 14 days) and I do my best to photograph them in a variety of poses. I’ve photographed 100s of newborns and each and every session is different. I work with parents to customize each session ensuring that they get exactly what they want. My packages are all-inclusive meaning everything is provided and there is are no additional purchases required ever. All packages include digital files and a printing release. I offer a variety of packages to choose from so, there is something for all budgets.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have so many things I want to do. Right now, I have a baby at home so, I only work part-time. At some point, I’d love to offer more sessions and I would love to expand my services to offer glamour maternity portraits and hospital lifestyle sessions. Maybe I can teach photography and travel the world at some point too. I don’t know where this will take me but, I definitely dream big.
