Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamika Ferrell.
Hi Tamika, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a love for fashion, and it’s been a part of me since I was a child. As a young girl, I grew up in the housing projects of Kansas City, Missouri. My mother instilled in me the importance of looking my best no matter the occasion or where I went. It didn’t matter if I was going to the corner store, I had to look my best. Oftentimes, I found myself looking through fashion magazines for hours. Their hair, color combinations, accessories, and style captivated me at a young age. After school, the neighborhood kids would go to arts and crafts. We learned how to sew, make pottery, clothes and more. It was there my creative juices began to flow.
At age 11, I made my first pair of camouflage pants. Fashion has always been a way for me to express myself without saying a word. The love I have for fashion caused me to be fashion forward. I’ve always knew what colors and styles would be trending for the season. As I got older in my teenage years, fashion and style became one with me. It was nothing I had to force because it came natural to me.
To this day, I dress according to how I feel. I never shop according to what’s in style, but according to my personality. I knew one day I would have a boutique. That was a dream of mine since I was a child. In 2010 I started my boutique and was selling shoes out the trunk of my car. I later moved to Houston, Texas in 2012. Although, I love fashion I wasn’t thinking about starting another boutique. However, in 2017 God begin speaking to me concerning a boutique and it was at that moment I begin to revisit my first love a child and my online boutique in Houston, Texas was birthed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can honestly say thus far it has been a smooth road. After being in business for 3 years I revamped and changed the name of my business to Hatrix and Company. I get a lot of support/business from people back home in Kansas City, Mo. I appreciate them very much for the love, shares on social media, referrals, and business they give and send to me. I can’t leave Houston out because they have been good to me as well.
During the pandemic, most people were at home shopping online. My website sales increased tremendously. I am a testimony that God can increase you even in the midst of a pandemic.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Hatrix & Company is known for good quality hats for men and women at an affordable price. It doesn’t matter if someone is making minimum wage or salary. We have a hat for that’s in their price range. We treat all of our customers like family and with respect. It doesn’t matter if someone is inquiring about a hat or if they purchased a hat. We are going to treat the person who inquired about a hat just like the person who purchased one. We go above and beyond to assist our customers and clients. Oftentimes, someone may be interested in buying a hat but don’t know their hat size or style that would look good on them. We take our time answering any questions they may have and offer solutions. We don’t mind holding our customer’s hands during the process. For us, it’s not about a sale. It’s about building rapport, trust, and relationship with our customers and clients. We operate in integrity who believes in treating people how I want to be treated. I have clients who have become like family to me. I send them gifts on their birthdays, anniversaries, or special moments in their lives. That’s my way of saying thank you. The boutique world is like a secret society. No one is going to tell you how to get started, the steps you need to take, or where to start. You’re pretty much on your own trying to figure out so much. One thing I’m most proud of is being in a position to be used by GOD to help numerous of women start their own business. I have mentored, encouraged, and brainstormed with a lot of women to assist in taking their business to next level. My definition of a boss is one who is able to put people in a position to eat while providing for their families.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe in God and that’s where all my blessings flow from. When I need a plan, answers, or feel stuck, I go down to knee bone valley as the older saints would say. I get on my knees and go into prayer. Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV reminds us “Call to me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.”
