Meet Monica Rawlins of Law Office of Monica Rawlins, P.C.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Rawlins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a native Houstonian. I received my undergraduate degree (B.S. in Criminal Justice) at the University of Houston-Downtown. Thereafter, I worked for CPS for over one year before attending and graduating from law school — Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. I received my Doctorate of Jurisprudence from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in May of 2001, I took the bar examination in July of 2001 and was licensed as an attorney with the State Bar of Texas on November 2, 2001. Immediately after being licensed, I opened up my own law practice, concentrating in family law — adoptions, custody cases, child support cases, divorces, name changes, interstate proceedings, etc. I have maintained my practice and practiced primarily in the area of family law since that time, which is now a bit over 20 years. Family law is an area I am passionate about, as I love helping people.

Over the past 25 years, I have been active in community service — working at homeless shelters, food banks, organizing prison ministry events at my home church, visiting nursing homes, volunteering with the Meals on Wheels program and much more.

I am now running for District Judge of the 328th Judicial District Court of Fort Bend County. This is a family law court. I now seek to bring my years of experience, professionalism and community service drive to the bench.

I am a divorced, single mother of a 16-year-old young man. He has been my motivation to work so hard. I love to spend time with family, travel and go to the movies.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The death of a close family member during law school and going thru a divorce shortly after my son was born has made this journey a bit difficult. I have a very supportive family. My faith and family helped me tremendously during the hard times.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My law practice has been operating for 20 years and this practice is primarily a family law firm. I have managed my own firm during this time. I have compassion for my clients and handle each case as though it was my own or a close family member’s case.

In addition to receiving professional and hard work, all of my clients have the ability to reach me directly regarding their case.

I have volunteered to take on cases at no cost through agencies.

If a potential client calls, I will make a determination if my services are even necessary and/or I will direct a client to a program that may be more of a fit without the expensive cost of a private attorney. My honesty with clients is very important to me.

Any big plans?
My plan is to become a District Judge for the family law court. I believe I can make unbiased, sound decisions that will help the people of Fort Bend community. Additionally, I intend to give each case full attention knowing that each case has its own DNA and no two cases are the same. The goal is to help litigants, not place them in a worse position.
