Today we’d like to introduce you to Master Hyunhoon Lee.
Master Hyunhoon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Tae Kwon Do training when I was 4 years old. I was very active and loved the sport. But now, as I look back at my childhood I realized Tae Kwon Do was not just an activity. Tae Kwon Do change my whole life. It benefited my life in so many different ways. The self-confidence that I built within myself makes me feel that I can do anything if I put an effort. And I learned about respect through training with other people. Lastly, I learned perseverance, one of Tae Kwon Do spirit, never giving up. I believe that I could make a difference through Tae Kwon Do. I am a 6th-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, I was a former member of the Korea National Tae Kwon Do demonstration Team, Vietnam National Poomsae Team Coach for two years, and was 2004 World Tae Kwon Do Hanmadang Champion and served as Head Master Instructor in Portland, Oregon.
In 2010, I decided to come to the United States to let more people know about Tae Kwon Do and also share all the benefits of Tae Kwon Do training in the bigger world. I taught Tae Kwon Do for six years in Portland, Oregon under Grand Master B.C Kim who is a 5-time World Champion and 1992 Barcelona Olympic gold medalist.
In October of 2015, I drove 36 hours to come to Katy, Texas to open my own Tae Kwon Do school. I’ve always dreamed of opening my own school with my name on it. I was very excited and also nervous because I didn’t know anyone in Katy, TX. I faced a lot of obstacles when I signed the lease of contract and built my school. Fortunately, I succeeded and overcame all the difficulties wisely and finally opened my first Tae Kwon Do school in Feb 2016 and opened my second school in Feb 2017. Now I have around 560 Tae Kwon Do students benefiting through our Tae Kwon Do program. I’m so thankful that I have met so many good people and our staff through Tae Kwon Do. I take pride in our Master Lee’s World Champion Tae Kwon Do family and look forward to more success in the future and contribute more to the community with our Tae Kwon Do Family. Thanks.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first came to the United States, English language, and the culture was the biggest challenge. When I came to Katy, Texas, I was all by myself and didn’t know anybody. I worked by myself to build my school. It was not easy, from finding the right location, contract signing, permit processing, advertising, finding students, and ways to make my school what it is today. Everything was a big challenge.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
INTEGRITY is one of the top attributes of a great leader. It is a concept of consistency of actions, values, methods, measures, principles, expectations and outcomes. It connotes a deep commitment to doing the right thing for the right reason, regardless of the circumstances. People who live with integrity are incorruptible and incapable of breaking the trust of those who have confided in them. Every human is born with a conscience and therefore the ability to know right from wrong. Choosing the right, regardless of the consequence, is the hallmark of integrity.
