Meet Watina Lee of Unlikely Boutique in East of Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Watina Lee.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Watina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born in Atmore, Alabama. I moved to Houston at the age of 9. I began my fascination with fashion in my teens. As I grew older fashion became an obsession, but not with your run of the mill pieces. I became a fan of everything unique and unlikely.

At the time, I found a hand full of stores that catered to my style but was very expensive. I would pick the most unusual pieces and put an unlikely twist to them. So with that being said, Unlikely Boutique was born in August of 2010. I felt there was a need for unique, quality, and affordable clothing.

As time went on, I not only wanted to be a buyer I wanted to have something in my boutique that was designed by and personally represented me. God put in on my heart to create a fashion t-shirt line promoting women empowerment, acceptance and growth. In August of this year I launched Unlikely Designs.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Unlikely Boutique has not been a smooth road. My biggest obstacle has been myself. I compared myself to other boutique owners and was questioning why there business seem to have taken off and seemed to successful. With that I became very discouraged which has caused me to question my vision and dream and being consistent.

As the years have went on I came to the realization that I cant measure where I am in my business by someone else and there’s. I’ve been consistent since 2015 no matter the highs and lows and I see the upward difference and its only getting better.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Unlikely Boutique – what should we know?
I describe Unlikely Boutique as a destination for chic casual wear. I mainly focus on pieces that are transformable. You can dress the pieces up or down, throw on a sneakers or heels depending on your mood. You can also wear the majority of my pieces to work. I may throw in a few funky pieces, but for the most part its casual.

I am Unlikely Boutique. I do everything.

I am known my prices. Fashion and the economy are ever changing so I strive to keep my prices affordable.

Being that Unlikely Designs is an extension of Unlikely Boutique, I’m very proud of my t-shirt line. I believe it has set me apart from others. It has done very well. I’m looking forward to the future of Unlikely Designs.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Learning to be versatile but at the same time staying true to yourself.
