Today we’d like to introduce you to Arehely Garcia.
Arehely, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started baking in my Junior year of High School. I attended Klein Forest High School and graduated in 2013. My aunt Silvia is my inspiration. She made many cakes for me when for my birthdays. They were so delicious and super detailed. Seeing her make cakes really inspired me to want to do it myself. It started off as a hobby and eventually with word of mouth I started receiving small orders here and there. I became a full time baker in 2016 after I had my daughter Leah (who is now 6 years old). She was diagnosed with cerebral Palsy and I needed a way to make money but also stay home with her as she started physical, occupational and speech therapy. Along with monthly doctor appointments to with specialists). I really enjoyed baking and being able to care for her full time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been bumps on the road! Juggling making cakes, ordering supplies and taking orders are all full time jobs. And as a small business, you juggle it all. To this day I still have times when I am overwhelmed with work, but I try to manage my time and set daily and long term goals. Being organized is super important and really helps keep me on track.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I make custom cakes in Houston, Tx and surrounding areas. I started off making cakes, cupcakes and all sorts of treats such as pretzels, Oreos, cookies, Rice Krispies, etc. These days I only make cakes and cupcakes. I enjoy when customers give me freedom and trust me to make something unique. But I also love customers who know what they want. I would say I’m known for very clean, simple work. I would say I’m proud to have gotten this far. I never imagined I would be making cakes for celebrities and meeting so many new people all the time. I have customers who have now become friends and I really love connecting with them.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I want to thank my aunt Silvia for being my inspiration. My parents and my siblings for always cheering me on.
My partner for always supporting me in anything and everything that has to deal with ‘Arehely Cakes’.
My daughter Leah, she tells anyone and everyone my name is Arehely Cakes. And refuses to accept my last name is Garcia and not Cakes. Lol.
And my workers Angeles and Frida for working everyday, sometimes long days to make these beautiful creations for our customers.
