Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Jackson.
Hi Jay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It started back in 2003 when I was in college and needed a job. A friend of mine that went to the church I attended worked for a construction company and was looking for some laborers to help out with a project. I started working for him and was promoted to assistant superintendent after about 2 months. I climbed the ranks to project manager within a year and a half. During this time I started my own company, J & J Community Improvement, Inc, taking on small projects that I could handle on my own. After about 6 months of running my own company and still working a full time job, I realized it was time to venture solely on my own. The business was going well for the first year and a half and then I started running into problem after problem. From employees not doing a good job to clients not paying after the work was completed. I had to learn how to prepare for the down time in this industry as those times surely came. After years and years of ups and downs, I’ve managed to find the formula for steady growth. It’s something that I have implemented in my business practices on a daily basis. It’s also one of the key ingredients I share with other business owners and professionals during their consultations. Using this formula, I went from growing up poor in a household of 13 to becoming a successful multi-millionaire. My construction company has grown over the last few years and we are on target for our highest grossing year to date. From state project, federal contracts and custom home builds, J & J Community Improvement. will be the go too firm for the future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been an interesting journey. There were potholes, unfinished roads and speed bumps, the kind that you don’t see coming, and once you hit it, it feels like everything underneath your car is broken. Yea needless to say, the road to success hasn’t been smooth. There were plenty of times when I wanted to give up and it didn’t seem like it was worth it. I remembered my foundation taught to me as a child and giving up wasn’t an option. This helped me to persevere through the hard times. I remembered the reason I was doing it in the first place, I wanted to create a legacy for not only me but my family as well.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Growing up in a poor single family household watching my mother work 2 jobs struggling to provide for a household of 13, my mother instilled in me the important values of hard work and taking pride in what you do. These fundamental core values are the essence of what my companies are built on. J & J Community Improvement. is a General Contracting firm that specializes in custom builds and renovations. Whether it’s residential or commercial, we can handle all construction needs. We offer competitive prices and quality work. We believe in providing exemplary customer service while bringing to life a concept or transforming your home or business to suit your needs. Our attention to detail is what sets us apart from our competition and this is what we are most proud of. This is why we stand behind our work with a 1 year warranty.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to those who are starting out in this industry would be to focus on your craft and learn as much about it as possible. Whether you start out in flooring, painting, framing or roofing. Know the ins and outs of your product. Anyone can do the work but not everyone can tell the client why or why not to use a product. It goes a long way when dealing with clients and they can see that you are knowledgeable in what you do. People do business with people they know, like, and trust. Also, having the right people around you for advice or help with tough situations is vital to the success of any business. There are pitfalls in business, but that doesn’t mean that you have to fall in them. There are people who you can learn from to help you avoid some if not most of them. Those are the people you want around you and I wish I knew that from the beginning.
