Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul-David and Stephanie Powell.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Paul-David and Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started in this sign industry in 1989 when I moved to Houston, TX. My cousin knew of a job opening at a local sign company so I applied and was hired. Fast forward to 1999. I started working for a great company that gave me a lot of room to grow. In 2001, I met my wife Stephanie. Stephanie is experienced in sales and the company I worked for needed someone great in sales so in 2002 she started working with me at the same company. Through all of this GOD had a vision we had no clue of. In 2004 Stephanie and I built our house moved in in September and got married in December that year.
By 2007 there had been a major shift at the company we worked for and the stress was taking a physical toll on me. I would get to work early every morning about 6 am everyone else came in about 8. I would use that time to read the bible and pray a lot. I went into Stephanie’s office when she got to work one day and told her to save every penny we have and we will continue to pray because something big will happen this year I just don’t know what it is. She said ok. She is a beautiful and faith-filled woman. In
April 2008, I was reading my bible and heard a voice say turn in your two-week notice. So I did. I could already feel the relief. When Stephanie came to work that morning I informed her of what I did. She said ok GOD will provide. I quit my job not knowing what I was going to do for income. I felt this is where I was supposed to be. People would ask me what I’m going to do next. My answer was to go home and watch the grass grow. “Then what” mow it, water it, and watch it some more. Because I’ve been in the industry for a long time I know a lot of people. When some found out I was not working for anyone they started calling asking me to work for them. I had to tell them I’m in no condition to work for anyone at this time. I really need a break. Their response was how about you go do this job for me as a contract? Sure why not? The banks not taking my grass clippings anymore for payment. Wraps of Texas was then born. In less than a year Stephanie was able to leave and was able to work full time for Wraps of Texas. In the beginning, we only focused on contract installations for companies that needed help or didn’t have experienced installers to help with all their large format graphics needs.
Throughout all of this GOD is number one. We pray not for wealth but for success. Success comes in many forms not always by dollar amounts. In our company logo, you’ll see it say Prayer Works. That’s not just an add-on. It’s part of the logo. It’s embedded in our company. On the back of all our company vehicles we have a bible verse John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” On all of our company shirts on one sleeve, it reads Prayer Works. We didn’t put them on display so much for others as we did to remind US who owns this company, GOD, and that we are only here to manage it. We have people comment on our sleeves or on the vehicles regularly. We’ve had people call and leave messages after hours saying thank you for putting John 15:5 on the back of your truck. I was having a bad day and that reminded me how much I need GOD. As I said these things are in place to keep the US in check. It’s a blessing to see GOD speak to others.
Our greatest accomplishments is to be able to create jobs for others. We are big believers in helping family and friends.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, there were times we made $90 all week but we had planned for this. We had saved money before we ever opened the business and can proudly say that we started and have maintained our business without ever taking out a loan. Challenges we run into sometimes is when large projects are canceled because of weather or the job is not prepped and ready for graphics installation. We then get on the phone and start trying to move jobs up or we will call clients to see if they need help to fill in those days we are losing because of the cancellation. Pricing is a challenge at a time. We will only use 3M products for our graphics installations. It is the best in our opinion and you get the most for your money by using it. We understand when customers can’t afford full wraps so we will try and work with them to get the most out of the budget they do have without sacrificing quality.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Wraps of Texas – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
