Today we’d like to introduce you to Chassidy Frelow.
Hi Chassidy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I always wanted to be an attorney and open up my own practice. I loved to argue and take up for people. I was always interested in criminal justice, history and politics, I participated in mock trials in middle school and I was on the debate team in high school.
I attended The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) for college. I majored in psychology because I love social and cognitive psychology. I enjoy learning about why people behave and think certain ways. My minors were legal studies (to get exposure to legal classes in preparation for law school) and African American studies (to learn more about my culture, history and our contributions to society).
In San Antonio, I began to take interest in community organizing, and I participated in a lot of protests, city council meetings, neighborhood strategy meetings, etc. to affect change in some of the minority communities in San Antonio in Summer of 2016, right before I began law school.
I attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University, a historically black college/university (HBCU) for law school. I graduated Cum Laude in 2019 and I passed the bar the same year. I also opened up my law practice that year and my very first case was a car accident case. In 2020, I participated in the Texas Opportunity and Justice Incubator Program to help build my practice, and I’ve been laying the foundation and improving ever since. My practice areas are family law, personal injury and criminal law.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road; there have been many bumps along the way. With me being a first-generation college and professional school graduate, I am the first to do a lot of things in my family so I’m figuring out a lot of things on my own along the way. I’m learning to not be afraid to reach out to others for help and guidance, there are others that are or have gone through similar struggles.
Social: I’m an introvert, so having to step out of my comfort zones and my shell is another difficult thing for me. Networking and marketing are really important things in the legal and business industries, and nowadays, on social media people want to know about your personal life and what you’re doing, so I am learning to be more open, to share my process and build relationships with colleagues and people in other industries.
Mental Health: Being an attorney and also having your own practice is hard work and can be overwhelming, so I’m learning to prioritize self-care and my mental health.
God’s speed: Sometimes we can get stuck on comparing ourselves and our success to others on social media and this is something that I’ve dealt with as well. I had to learn that everything is in God’s timing and everyone has a winning season, as long as I continued to do the work and remain focused, my results would come.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Law Office of Chassidy Frelow?
My firm name is: The Law Office of Chassidy Frelow. My practice areas are Family Law, Criminal Law and Personal Injury. I practice in the Houston, TX area in Harris County and the surrounding counties.
I truly care about our clients; form personal relationships with them; and work closely with them when pursuing their goals for their case. I’m big on communication and I am open and honest about case outcomes and expectations with my clients. I am passionate about what I do, it shows through my work and I take pride in being able to assist people throughout some of the most challenging and vulnerable times of their lives.
Only about 5% of lawyers are African American and about 2% are African American women, I believe I was handpicked for this profession. I am proud to be a part of the minority and to be able to show others that it’s possible.
I want readers to know that they can trust me with their legal issues because I work hard, I’m passionate and I can get the job done.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a good kid growing up; I loved school and was always on the honor roll. I enjoyed going to church and I also played the piano. I had a good amount of friends, that I am still friends with to this day. Outside of my close family and friends, most people would say I was shy and quiet, but I’m sure my friends would beg to differ lol. I was always outspoken and stood up for what I believed in, right or wrong. I loved to argue and take up for people. I was always interested in criminal justice, history and politics.
