Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos De Los Santos.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
First and foremost, I think my parents were a huge part of my inspiration for becoming a business owner. They always had a business(es) as I was growing up. They are still business owners today and they most definitely taught me that working hard was the only way to accomplish what you want.
My passion for sneakers, love for basketball, and also grew up during the Jordan era of the NBA were all factors influences on Eight One.
I was fortunate enough to have my 1st pair of Jordans in 1990, the Fire Red 5s. I had a love for sneakers at a very young age. I started playing organized basketball circa 1988/1989 and for the most part, I played ball in my sneakers. I wanted to be like Mike and wear what he was wearing on the court. I picked up a few retro jordans from the mid to late 90s and then when I graduated college in 2006 I began collecting more heavily.
What started out as a hobby eventually progressed into a business idea. In 2011 the vision became a reality.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Where do I begin, haha? There are so many challenges that you face running your own business. You can have a solid plan in place but things happen and you have to be able to react.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is opening up accounts with the major footwear brands. There’s so much red tape to clear before you get their product on your shelves.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The thing that I’m proud of the most, is the evolution of Eight One. Where we started 6.5 years ago and how far we’ve come. Eight One has grown and evolved over the years to meet the needs of our customers.
Eight One is the go-to spot for sneakers in Midtown. For those that want to avoid the traffic and crowds at the malls, Eight One fills that void.
What were you like growing up?
If I can sum it up in one word, COMPETITIVE. I grew up playing sports and always tried to be the best at everything that I did and always wanted to improve and get better.
Even academically, I tried to put my best foot forward and I feel like that’s carried over to Eight One.
