Meet Karen De Amat of Social Behavior, a Social Media agency

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen De Amat.

Karen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As with most entrepreneurial journeys, my story has sprawling twists and turns. But nothing really makes sense until I decided to launch Social Behavior and I still find myself so deeply in love with what I do every day.

Following 7 years in Finance at an Oil & Gas company, I took on a volunteer role in the marketing department. It brought out a character in me that I had been suppressing. I walked away from Corporate America and took a leap of faith into a full-time marketing career in the exotic car and luxury lifestyle industry. That role opened many opportunities and I soon shifted gears into the premium Tequila world as a Market Manager for a start-up Tequila brand, Riazul Tequila. Following that, I came back to Texas to work in a private members-only Club as their Marketing Membership Director.

My clients and colleagues noticed that in all my roles I harnessed social media as a platform to market the brands I was working in a creative fashion. They constantly applauded for me that, and I was able to close a lot of sales due to social media. Facebook was just evolving and I was growing with it and capitalizing on it.

In 2014 I decided to tie in my passion for healthy food and my area of expertise, Marketing, by creating my 1st start-up SoBe Fit Foods, a meal-prep delivery business. I was overly ambitious, ahead of the times (now it’s saturated), and severely underfunded. It was my first start-up. The business was successful and had potential, but after several unexpected trials and tribulation, I was defeated. I lost everything and I came back to Texas with nothing but the clothes on my back. But I never quite lost the will to overcome and succeed. In 2014, I founded one of the first Social Media agencies in Houston, Social Behavior, a fusion of Social Media + Consumer Behavior. And life hasn’t been the same since! Every day I’m proud yet humbled to be the Founder & President of Social Behavior.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey definitely has not been easy! There are several challenges that present themselves along the way when you’re trying to accomplish great things. I have put in blood and sweat equity in to get to where I am today, and even at Social Behavior, I’ve had employees disappoint me in unethical manners, I’ve had to take legal action to protect my business, I’ve had to sacrifice to make ends meet, I still burn the midnight oil and so much more.
But never does any of that deter me from my mission. And overall the common denominator is every single day I wake up with a renewed energy ready to serve. I wake up with an abundance of gratitude, joy, and peace. Every single day! Not one day, do I wake up feeling sorry for myself or for my setbacks, for my circumstance, or for my workload. We are blessed to be this busy!
