Conversations with Anna Hazel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Hazel.

Hi Anna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been scratching the creative itch for a long time and finally got the nerve to promote my art in early 2021. I studied art in the International Baccalaureate program at Lamar HS and went on to take a few semesters at Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston. I moved to Austin in 2007 where I studied printmaking, darkroom photography, and painting at Austin Community College for two years. I moved around the US for seasonal jobs here and there, always sketching, writing letters, and drawing postcards for friends along the way. Early 2021, I was at a point in my life where I needed to make some life decisions, and I sort of let fate decide. Several Instagram followers asked me for paintings back to back, and I decided to roll with it. I started promoting myself as a pet portrait artist, and the rest is an ever-changing progression of work and connections. I’ve had some setbacks, but life always points me in the direction I’m supposed to go. I’d love to do more art donations for fundraisers around Houston, but in the meantime, I’ll be cooped up in the studio making whatever comes to mind or behind the table at local markets.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, my biggest disappointment was right before the Sadie Art Show and Fundraiser in April 2022, my artist’s Instagram account became locked. I had spent a year growing and sharing works, and then one day, I just couldn’t post content anymore. I was distraught for a while, but then I realized I could start over. My new page is more than just pet portraits, I share all of the little things I’m working on. It ended up being a disguised blessing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist who does it all. I promote myself as a pet portrait artist, but I also sew, tie macrame, draw, and make leather jewelry. If I’m painting, it’s usually in acrylics, but I’ve been known to dabble in watercolors and paint markers. I’m currently working on a mini-series of people on bikes around Houston- so if you know any cool people who would be down for a photo session/posing for the next painting, send them my way! If I can, I use supplies that I’ve rescued from the roadside or upcycled items from friends and clients for my craft. I scavenged some mdf from behind a shop that I chopped into 3.5” squares that I can stuff in my fanny pack for tiny on the go art projects.

How do you think about happiness?
Doing my part to brighten people’s lives through art makes me happy. If I can save a few items from the landfill and transform them into desirable items, even better. Long bike rides and puppy smiles make me happy too. Oh, and finding chanterelles, oysters, violets, dandelions, anything I can eat, on a hike. Can’t forget playtime with my niece and nephews, they should be at the top of this list.
