Today we’d like to introduce you to Iman Da Don.
Hi Iman, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am 24 years old and originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. That is where I was born, I moved out of Louisiana right before Katrina and have been living in some parts of Texas ever since ( Dallas, San Antonio, Houston). I have always had a strong passion and gift for music. My dad was a rapper, TRE-8, in New Orleans who signed to No Limit in the 90’s so it’s really in my blood. My mom also wrote raps and is highly musically inclined. She can tell you where any sample in almost any song originally came from. I pursued music as a kid, thinking I wanted to sing and later starting groups with my friends in middle school, but I fell off with it right after going to High School. I decided to pursue my other creative endeavors, like acting and fashion. I have been taking acting classes and performing in plays since I was in 7th grade. I decided to start a clothing line during my senior year of High School, after always being complimented on my style, and really ramped it up when I got to college at UTSA. I was more known for clothing and doing local fashion shows on campus than anything music-related. I didn’t tell my friends I could rap until like a year after pursuing fashion. I tried to juggle both for a while but slowly music became my top priority. I will never give up any of my passions because I truly believe I can do it all and I DO!
I am more focused on my music career at the moment but I know pretty soon I will have the freedom to explore my other passions again as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! Imposter syndrome is so real, for a while I didn’t really think I deserved the things I am pursuing. I didn’t believe I was good enough to achieve high success. I know now that I am worthy of whatever I put my mind to and can achieve whatever I work for but still even now when I get emails about interviews or people enjoying my music I’m shocked.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a rapper and songwriter. I’m just happy to be able to create. I’m just me, that’s what sets me apart. I am not following a plan laid out by anybody else but me.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Stay consistent. It is so important to continue to put out content and your art no matter what. Don’t hold on to your work, drop that shit!
