Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Boyd.
Ken, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The thought to do stand up comedy came to me just as a personal challenge to myself. I was a fan of the art form my entire life and I was always “the funny guy” at work and school so I questioned could I be a “funny guy” in front of complete strangers. Almost a decade later I am an accredited stand up comedian that has appeared on Comedy Central and performing several shows a night in New York City.
Has it been a smooth road?
It absolutely, positively has NOT been a smooth road, it never is when taking the road less traveled. Entrepreneurship is the most glorious, terrifying and rewarding thing you will ever experience and usually in that order. When I first started to stand up comedy I remember all my friends, family and co-workers were so excited and happy for me. This is the glory phase. I had barely touched a microphone but everyone was so supportive. I existed in that bubble of support of years until I decided to challenge myself yet again by moving to New York City. I WAS TERRIFIED! I had zero pull, clout or cachet.
I was starting from scratch. I was I full-time comedian in Houston and all of a sudden I needed to find a day job. I found work a department store as a loss prevention guard. Can you imagine it? Security by day, comedian by night. Or so that was the plan. However, you really don’t have the energy to be funny after being on your feet for 8 or more hours. This day job was compromising my career, one had to go. Thankfully I was fired after 2 years. As fate would have it, I had just started working at a little comedy club in Times Square called “LOL Comedy Club” where I still perform to this day. To say that I am a full-time comedian in New York City is very……..”rewarding.”
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mr Ken Boyd story. Tell us more about the business.
Well, I am a stand-up Comedian, I specialize in performing live and entertaining strangers. What am I known for? I’d say I’m quite known yet but I am diligently working on it. I’m definitely most proud of my television debut last year on Comedy Central. I was featured on a new show entitled “Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City.” I’d say I have a certain likability and natural element on stage that sets me apart from others.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
The next 5-10 years are very bright for Mr. Ken Boyd. I’m scheduled to make my second television appearance next year on Fox. I plan to get several appearances under my belt and then set my sights towards the big screen. All in all, I will continue building my profile and my brand.
