Meet Tomas Ortiz of A’s Boxing Academy in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomas Ortiz.

Tomas, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started competing in the sport of boxing at the age of 8. I had many amateur fights and eventually turned professional at the age of 17. I fought 5 professional fights. Even though I Was no longer fighting I kept up with the boxing lifestyle. After being approached by several people requesting me to train them, I decided I would open a gym… A’s Boxing Academy.

I wanted to be able to teach kids this wonderful sport. Boxing is so much more than a sport. It’s a lifestyle. You have to prepare your body physically but you also have to learn how to be disciplined enough to control yourself mentally and emotionally. It is one of the most well-rounded sports out there. I currently have students that range in ages from 7-16. I enjoy what I do every single day

Has it been a smooth road?
Like anything worthwhile, there have been many struggles along the way and I am sure there are many that are yet to come. With God’s help, I will keep pushing forward.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with A’s Boxing Academy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
A’s Boxing Academy is a boxing program. We train kids and prepare them for competition throughout the year. Our kids compete in tournaments and boxing events locally and hopefully soon they will also do so nationally. I think what sets us apart from many other boxing gyms is that we put the kids first at all times.

We organize different events throughout the year so that the kids can bond. That strong bond they have is what helps set us apart. We are a family.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Our city is incredible. The diversity is amazing. Houston has something for everyone. Unfortunately, that includes traffic. Houston has traffic for you no matter where you go…but eventually you learn to accept it as part of your day.
