Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Blasdel.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m creative by nature and as a kid, I used to say I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. Looking back, I think that the artistic field was always destined to be photography. Ever since my preteen years, I felt a responsibility to capture photos of all the things- camps, soccer games, vacations, sleepovers with friends, just the little moments that I knew would be distant memories one day.
And at the risk of aging myself, those were taken on disposable cameras! The path to becoming a photographer wasn’t conscious, but a gifted point-and-shoot, lots of fine art college classes, an entry-level DSLR later, and Megan Blasdel Photography was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can’t say it’s been a bumpy road to success, but I also can’t say it’s been an easy one. I think the biggest struggle was coming to terms with the fact that being busy doesn’t equate to being successful. Burnout is a real thing and was pivotal in changing my business to a full-service model. This came with unique challenges, and many sleepless nights were spent learning a whole new way of doing business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Have you ever been to an awesome boutique? The kind where you tell them what you need help with, and they magically come up with great options you didn’t even know existed? Well, I’m that, in photographer form.
My approach to each session is all of the “I’ll help my clients get this accomplished” vibes, with none of the stuffiness one might expect from a luxury experience. I specialize in seniors and families, and I’d say I’m most known for my vibrant photographs, providing finished artwork, and making a genuine connection with my clients.
Do you have any advice for those just starting?
Speaking from experience, we all usually start as hobbyists and “learn the hard way.” I wish I would’ve known these things starting:
1. Once you’re ready to launch into business, get legal. That means a tax ID and insurance, among other things.
2. Know your numbers! If you don’t know the Cost of Doing Business, you don’t have a starting point for pricing.
3. Find a community of other local photographers. If there isn’t one where you live, start one. These people aren’t your competition- they are a wealth of knowledge and will likely become some of your closest friends.
