Today we’d like to introduce you to Angie Kim.
Hi Angie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I actually grew up on the east coast and recently moved to Houston last year. I spent the past 10 years going through medical school and residency training. I loved the work I did as a physician but hated that I had no time freedom or even creative freedom. While working as a physician in a hospital, I realized there was no room for creativity, even as a surgeon. There are so many rules and protocols and techniques we have to follow, I felt like a robot with no room for growth. I came to the realization that being allowed to exercise creativity was what was lacking in my life.
Additionally, the hours worked were brutal and I sacrificed many holidays away. My time is extremely important and I don’t want to waste it arguing with insurance companies. By saving time in that area, I can spend more time with my family and my dogs. I’d be able to catch up on sleep, eat better, exercise – a lot of basic necessities. The ability to have full control over your time and what you can do is so worth it. These were the major motivating factors for me to break out on my own.
I didn’t want to sleepwalk through life anymore. I knew I had a passion for helping people feel and look their best, so I finally decided it was time to get uncomfortable and take a chance on myself. Even since I was a teenager, I’ve constantly been coming up with new ideas and I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of trying to make a new idea happen. You learn so much by going through the process yourself. So I decided to open up my own medical aesthetics practice. I love that I now get to combine my passions for medicine and entrepreneurship in the field of medical aesthetics.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The journey to this point has definitely been bumpy. I started seriously trying to make Glow Up MD happen back in August 2022. That’s when I started driving around and looking at various spaces for lease. At the same time, I was trying to understand the legal regulations and insurance needs of starting a medical aesthetics practice. Setting up the business entity and trying to learn all I could about business was really tough because we don’t receive any business education in medical school or training. These were our biggest hurdles. I had no idea where to start and felt really overwhelmed, but my husband and I slowly pieced everything together.
Once we finally settled on a location, we decided to do most of the remodeling ourselves. My husband and I spent many long weekends at the practice tiling, cleaning, and assembling furniture. He also works full time so we were there at odd hours a lot. After that, we had to do a lot of shopping around for supplies and waiting for deliveries.
We had our soft opening in January 2023, and I’d say our biggest struggle right now is marketing and getting the word out that we exist.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Glow Up MD medspa is all about giving you the confidence to step out of your comfort zone and achieve your goals, whether it’s landing your dream job or getting that promotion. Your appearance plays a big role in how you present yourself, and we want you to be able to put your best foot forward.
We offer a variety of nonsurgical aesthetic treatments to help prevent and reverse signs of aging, aid in weight loss, improve your quality of life, and improve your skincare routine! We treat multiple skin conditions such as brown spots, redness, fine lines and wrinkles, loss of volume, acne, scarring, and poor texture or tone, that cannot be treated at all or as effectively by a traditional esthetician at a day spa. Injectables (such as Botox and dermal fillers), microneedling, and deeper chemical peels should only be performed by professionals who have been trained exclusively in these procedures.
What sets us apart from other medical spas is our unparalleled customer service, our flexibility, and our transparency. Additionally, there are very few practices, if any, around here where the physician does all of the procedures. We want to keep it this way to ensure the safety of all our patients.
We also offer flexible hours that accommodate most schedules. Mondays and Fridays are our early mornings. Tuesdays and Thursdays are our late nights. We also have a weekend day Saturday. Walk-ins are always welcome as well!
One of my proudest moments recently was when one of my patients told me that we’re the most professional medspa she’s been to. During her consultation, I thoroughly explained to her the procedure, why I did things a certain way, and explained all the potential risks associated with it. I was surprised that she was surprised I did that! There was a lot she didn’t know about the treatments she had been receiving.
What do you think about happiness?
I love a good challenge and the elated feeling of accomplishment after completing a challenge. What I discovered I love more is using my skills to help others reach their goals and tackle their challenges, so that they can feel that as well.
