Today we’d like to introduce you to Emiltzie Barrios.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working as an auto insurance agent when I was 20 years old with a big insurance company at that time.
After a few months in the company the company decided to open several insurance agencies and the gave me one location to run it. This company gave me the training and the knowledge on how to manage a successful insurance agency, after working with them for almost 5 years I decided to open my own insurance agency.
At the beginning I started with auto insurance only but after a few months I integrated commercial insurance, home insurance, bonds and real estate transforming my insurance agency to a multi services business.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely there have been obstacles and challenges on the read, one of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was when my husband had an accident in 2010. He broke his neck and was paralyzed from the neck down, the doctors gave us no hope of him ever moving again.
At that time I thought I was going to lose everything, I thought how am I going to run my agency and at the same time take care of my husband? But thank God my husband has a strong will and a great positive mind, he once told me “You can’t reach the top if you haven’t hit rock bottom”. He told me we are going to get through this together and hearing this from him who was paralyzed made me stronger and we got through it with the help and support of family members.
My father helped me to run the agency while I was taking care of my husband at the hospital and attending his physical therapies. My mother and mother in law helped me with my two daughters and at the end I was able to keep my business running.
