Rising Stars: Meet Cassidy Kinney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassidy Kinney.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
So, what started my Interior Design journey is my mom, who is also my role model; she has been doing Interior Design for 20 years. She specializes in Kitchens, which I knew that was something I didn’t want to specialize in, but I wanted to be in the Interior Design field. Once I knew this something I wanted to pursue, I applied to University of Kentucky College of Design program. Now, this was a very anxious time in my life because they only accepted between 15-25 students. I had no clue if I was going to get in or not. But all glory to God, I got accepted in. I did my four years at UK majoring in Interior Design, which really had its ups and downs and a TON of all-nighters. I graduated May 7, 2022, which was also on my birthday, which was such a blessing. After graduation, I decided to move to Houston at the end of August, not having a single clue what I was going to do once I got here. I moved here all on faith because that’s what God told me to do. At the time, I was a full-time content creator and a social media manager and was not doing Interior Design for 3-4 months. Until a friend, who I only hung out with once in Houston, told me, someone she knew needed an Interior Designer. She told me I should reach out to her, and I did. The client got back to me and was ready to meet the next day! This was the project that took my business to the next level. Ever since then, I’ve been doing Interior Design, and I love what I do and the people I get to meet and work with!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, it’s been a smooth road; I think some of the struggles were structuring my fees. But I’ve also made mistakes on each project and have learned from each of them.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an Interior Designer based in Houston, Texas, I specialize in Residential Design; I would say I’m known for being a funky/edgy/maximalist designer since that is what a lot of my clients always request their space to be. I am mostly proud of how young I am (I’m 22 years old, turning 23 in May 2023), and my business has been very successful, and I’ve only been doing this for 4 months! It’s very shocking, but the hard work is definitely paying off! I think what sets me apart is the way I use my social media (my TikTok and Instagram). I’ve built a community on my main Instagram and have connected with so many people, and they love my personality and how outgoing and talkative I am. I think most designers don’t really connect with their followers because they try to keep it extremely sophisticated. But I want to be sophisticated but also comforting to my followers.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m from Cleveland, OH, and I’m about to launch my pillow decor business named “SVN PILLOWS.” I design mood boards for a small fee for clients who don’t want the full Interior Design service but want to DIY and have a designer’s expertise.
