Meet Jalena Davis of TEXAS FOOT AND ANKLE SPECIALISTS in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalena Davis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started with this company 1 year ago and it has been the best experience of my career so far. Dr. Applegate reached out to me on Linked In explaining that he recently opened a podiatry clinic in Cinco Ranch and was looking for a Marketer/Liaison to help him grow the practice. The timing was perfect as I had been working for a hospital system in Clear Lake with no real potential for growth, working under difficult leadership.

I actually have his LinkedIn message to be printed out and on my desk. It just makes me happy to look at it 1 year later as it is wild how close we have become working together professionally and how much our company has grown in a short amount of time. When I first started in January 2017, the phones were silent and you could hear a pin drop in the office.

As I sit in my office now in December of 2017 writing this, the phones have to be picked up alternating between our Clinic Manager and Medical Assistant as the calls have become too frequent for one person to handle on their own. We have a full schedule of patients and have been booking new ones this Monday morning. It’s really incredible to reflect upon actually.

Dr. Applegate and I had an immediate connection and bond the moment he started interviewing me as it was clear from the start we both had a passion for vision, execution, and the development of startups. He is incredibly charismatic and got me on board with his vision for the company immediately. That was a Friday afternoon. Monday 8 am I was in the office as the new Practice Marketer/Liaison and was ready to execute right away!

This past year Dr. Applegate and I have created marketing plans, reviewed, and revised on a consistent basis using data and statistical analysis to determine which marketing avenues were giving us the best ROI. We have strategically set up a plan consisting of the Internet, Referral, and Community Marketing that has gotten us to the point we are today. We still learn and revise as needed, and that will never stop even if we get huge one day. We both feel the biggest mistake big companies make is when they get so big that they feel that they have “made it” and get fat, dumb, happy, and comfortable so to speak.

Life is constantly evolving and so are organizations. Especially in today’s rapidly changing world. If you aren’t reflecting, changing, and innovating on a constant basis, your competition is naturally going to catch up and become the new winner. We have both asked to keep each other accountable that when our company becomes large we will never fall into the complacency trap. We will never “make it” but will always be chasing what’s next. To me, that is exciting and opens up a channel for never-ending creativity, innovation, expansion, and growth.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say that yes, overall, we have been blessed for this first year to go relatively smoothly for us. However; I think that is because Dr. Applegate and I are lucky to have that “juice”. He is an incredible leader and businessman, and my strengths lie in taking direction and running wild with it. It really has been a killer combo.

I think the only time we got a little bit worried was at our 4-5 month point where we were not seeing the patient volume we wanted. I remembered from working with a previous startup medical practice that it typically takes at least 6 months to see any real results. I tried to remind Dr. Applegate of that and sure enough 6 months in like clockwork we started blowing up.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is summer time at my grandparent’s house in New Jersey. They had a big pool in their backyard and our cousins from Colorado would come out to visit for awhile. We would swim, dance, sing, put on shows, run to get ice cream from the ice cream truck, and almost every night our grandparents would let us stay up late, eat chocolate jello pudding and watch The Sound of Music. I have seen that movie countless times! We would play dress up and perform the ” I am 16 going on 17″ song from the movie for our parents and grandparents. We couldn’t wait to be cool 16-year-old girls!
