Today we’d like to introduce you to Athena Elliott.
Athena, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My passion for the nail industry is strong. Basically… all roads lead to nails. I still work in my salon, SPAthena- Aesthetics For Diabetics. I keep very busy seeing referrals from foot and ankle surgeons, dermatologists and MD Anderson. The people who seek my advanced education are also seeking the highest level of infection control.
My clientele ranges from Houston’s elite to the West U moms. Some of my techniques include whatever is trending in the nail word. You can bet I will be using the newest techniques and hottest nail art products for 6 months before other salons catch on.
I started a podcast for nail professionals called Nail Talk Radio that aired weekly for 90 mins lasting 7 years loving the ability to educate the industry through media.
I am VP of Medinail Learning Center. This is advanced education based on exceeding our state standards using the highest level of infection control.
My efforts to educate the consumer lead me to co-author a consumer-driven mobile app called Safe Salon Rating. This landed me on Dr. OZ as an expert in salon safety, where I was able to show the public what to look for in a safe salon including autoclaves and pedicure liners. ABC 20/20 had me do undercover work for an expose where I was interviewed.
Expert witness, award-winning nail professional, cover artist, manicurist for London Fashion Week, 4 months teaching for a private nail school in Taiwan last year…are just a few of the many paths I have taken. I own annual nails focused trade show called Best Lil’ Nail Show Texas and host an international nail competition out of London -Nailympia USA. I recently expanded my show to Vegas this past Oct. There is more I could share but I will go with this for now
I am the Lead Corporate Trainer for “barefoot toenail reconstruction by LCN USA.
Has it been a smooth road?
Single parenting my two children while trying to carve out a niche in the nail world was very hard. They are grown and wonderful and I’m still at it. lol
When I began my mission in 96… It was to educate the nail industry on the need for sterilization using autoclaves. My peers thought I was nuts. and even blacklisted me for about 2 years. My biz partner Dr. Robert Spalding DPM and I continued the fight to educate
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the SPAhena story. Tell us more about the business.
I am known for being the safest salon in Houston and being doctor referred. I specialize in foot care for diabetics, chemo nail care, marathoners, and a lot of toenail reconstruction. It took me many years to build my relationships with area doctors and I am very proud of this.
I am proud every time I get a referral slip clearing my client for service.
I am proud to lead the country as the 1st….. Advanced Nail Technician… Medical Nail Technician and Certified Clinical Podiatric Medical Assistant.
I’m super proud that my salon doesn’t just meet state standards, it exceeds state standards.
