Hi Luis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello I’m Luis and I’m 29 years old. I’m a professional and licensed youth soccer coach based in Katy, TX who started a soccer training company called Total football Performance (TFP). I was Born in Costa Rica, moved to the states when I was 5 years old. Moved around a bit during my childhood years but grew up mostly in NJ. Absolutely soccer obsessed growing up and to this day I can still say I have that same passion for the game that I had in my childhood. Except my playing days are mostly over and now I focus on coaching and training kids in the beautiful game. My journey in Houston all started when I moved from NJ in 2019. I moved to work for Cedar Stars Rush Houston Soccer Academy that is also based in Katy. People within our academy started asking me about individual training. I saw there was an opportunity to create something to work with kids in an individual or small group setting. Now there’s tons of private trainers for soccer and even companies in the area, but I wanted to create something where the kids could really connect and learn proper techniques for in-game scenarios. In 2020, I started with individuals and then was able to start group training once I had enough interest. Little by little, athletes and families started recommending me to other people. Fast forward 3 years, I am now blessed to work with over 150 athletes in the entire Houston area (Katy, Richmond, Sugarland, Missouri City, Sienna Plantation, Houston). Even have had the opportunity to work with high level players from out of the state who are visiting Houston. As well as connect and give training tips to other athletes in other states and countries through social media.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think anything in life is ever a smooth road. One of the toughest challenges I faced was literally starting everything from scratch just like every entrepreneur out there. I run all my own social media accounts for TFP and also record and edit all my own videos to post. Not to mention moving to the Houston area from across the country and no one knowing me.I think this was definitely the toughest part of everything. So, little by little, you have to build that credibility because people only want to work with the best, especially competitive athletes. Definitely not easy but I’ve enjoyed every single minute of where this sport has taken me on my playing and coaching journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I had the opportunity of playing at a high level and just wanted to use all those experiences to help the athletes I work with get the most out of every training session. I put my heart and soul into my work with every single athlete. I specialize in teaching speed, agility, coordination, technical skills, proper dribbling, passing, and shooting techniques, all soccer-specific.
The best part of my job is when athletes send or tag me in videos of things we worked on in training being applied and executed in games.
Also, when I see my athletes be selected to play at a more competitive level. I work with athletes who have been selected to play at Regional & National teams, Olympic Development Programs, and MLS Next or ECNL level, which are 2 of the most competitive levels youth soccer players can currently play at. Some have even moved on to play college and still come work with me during their winter & summer breaks. It gives me great satisfaction to see these kids grow and develop into top players and move on to the next level and having done my little part in helping them get there.
Pricing:
- Individual sessions starting rate is $40/hr (local to Katy)
- Individual sessions starting rate is $50/hr (outside of katy)
- Group sessions (minimum of 2 players) $30/player for 1.5 hrs local to Katy
- Group sessions outside of Katy (minimum of 3 players) $30/player for 1.5hrs
