Meet Kate Pernoud of Maison Pernoud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Pernoud.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Maison Pernoud was born out of my love of travel and finding unique objects. Over the years, I’ve worked to decorate our home with unique objects that are special, not things that are found in big box shops. Maison Pernoud is truly a family business and I love seeing the pride on our children’s faces when items they picked out in Europe end up in other people’s homes.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve learned to expect the unexpected and to not stress about things I can not control. Originally I imagined Maison Pernoud being all antiques. However, there are a lot of fabulous antique dealers in Houston. We’ve expanded into other avenues in order to remain current while sticking to our goal of carrying unique items. The generation that is currently furnishing their homes has varying opinions about antique and vintage items. It is fun to see someone walk away with a Maison Pernoud item and hear them say, “this is the first older item I’ve bought!”

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Maison Pernoud, LLC – what should we know?
I started off just buying antiques, but as the business has grown, we’ve begun making things that incorporate antique pieces. For example, we make acrylic trays and put antique and vintage handles on them. We also craft lamps using acrylic and antique parts, only making a few of each style. Recently, we began carrying large pieces of decorative onyx. Each piece of onyx is unique and given they are made from millions of years old stone, they mix well with antiques and mid-century pieces. We are working to get sales online this year and are excited to better serve clients outside of Texas.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I was once an English teacher and I love to read. Who doesn’t love a really good story? I think my enthusiasm in telling people about where I found certain pieces is contagious. When I see a client get excited about a piece of furniture or object, it makes me happy to tell them where I found it and any history behind it. It brings me great joy to know my items end up loved in other peoples homes.
