Today we’d like to introduce you to City Girls Who Walk Houston. They and their team shared their story with us below:
City Girls Who Walk Houston was founded May 1, 2022, inspired by similar women’s walking groups in New York City and Chicago. Our first walk was attended by 18 women, and we’ve been growing ever since, typically leading from about 40 to 100 women at each walk. Each walk is special and has its own vibe! We’ve led some walks with over 200 women, and once, we had more than 300! We usually walk about 3 miles in about an hour, and everyone is welcome to walk at their own pace and distance. We love the community we’ve built within the greater community, and we cherish the friendships that have formed from our group. We welcome all women, all ages, including babies, toddlers, children, and friendly dogs on leashes, and the age range of members is 18 to 85. Some women come to our walks with friends, but most come alone. In addition to our weekly walks, we get together for brunch the first Saturday of each month, we lead popup walks and hikes, and host a variety of wellness events, as well as community collaborations with other organizations and businesses. One of our most treasured activities is getting together for coffee each week following our Sunday morning walks.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
City Girls has been the most fun! We realize how special (and rare) this organization is, and we take great care to ensure we facilitate a safe space with opportunities for women to have a “soft place to land” and make meaningful connections. We’re inspired by our members, who keep us motivated and focused on the simplicity of who we are and what we’re doing. A group like City Girls turns a very big city into a small town, and that’s important, especially for women who have relocated to Houston. We now have over 20,000 members, and our original 18 are still with us. It’s a real thrill having the role we have in the community, we take our leadership responsibilities seriously, and we’re grateful for everyone who has joined us. There are women who have moved to Houston on a Saturday, and they’re at our walk Sunday morning, stepping into an instant community. The sisterhood and camaraderie within our group is remarkable!

City Girls is known for being a fun, friendly, welcoming, inclusive, and diverse group of women. We’re most proud of the relationships we’ve made, the community we’ve built, and the partnerships we’ve developed. The women who join our walks are the most interesting, intelligent, inspiring, cool, kind, wonderful, the list goes on!, women we’ve ever met. Our foundation has largely been built on the basic principle of women supporting women, and we’re all so grateful our first walk has evolved into who and what we are today.
