Today, we’d like to introduce you to Trevion Houston.
Hi Trevion, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your back story.
I started coaching AAU 10 years ago with my twin, Davion Houston. We started coaching our younger brothers and their friends. These young playaz would score hundred-point games through high school, and it was then that we knew we had a special gift for coaching. During the boys high school AAU run, we named the team “Mud Brothers” with our brother Donald Law and his family’s organization Level1 Elite, and we went on a winning tour. From that team, we coached other teams under the L1 family, and finally, I was able to coach my son Kaedan Cash. This brings us to the present day. During the last spring/summer ball season, L1 allowed my brother and I to take the lead with the middle school team. After an extremely long conversation with Janay Cash, Swaveway Playaz was born. This organization is completely family-run; our son Kaedan Cash is the CEO, and Janay and I are the operating managers. I am also the head coach; however, we do not play daddy ball over here, lol, and it’s bigger than basketball. We are trying to open the doors we wish were opened for us at thirteen and fourteen years old.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When doing something great, it’s never a smooth road, especially when dealing with grown boys and kids. Along this journey, we have lost players tragically, and I want to take the time to acknowledge them as well: Kaleb “K1” Williams and Carl “C3” Spivey III. These losses shook us; however, they also made us stronger and gave us an even greater purpose. A few struggles we face are getting the children to unlearn what they have picked up on in their environments, especially since we only have them for a short period of time, and the lack of parental support.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are culture curators, meaning we set trends and help create avenues to change lives and make dreams come true. To create these avenues, we’ve created networking events, fashion shows, and, of course, basketball games. These are all community-led events that are geared towards elevating the environment that shaped myself and my brothers, my team and now are a part of shaping my son.
I am most proud that I can keep my brother Artreal Jones’s legacy alive. This was all his dream, and unfortunately, we lost him right after high school graduation to a heart attack; he died doing what he loved: playing basketball.
What sets me apart is that though I am living a rockstar lifestyle, I do not do it with an ego! I constantly take myself out of the equation; this is not about me; it’s about seeing everyone connected to me win! I have to do it the SWAVE way, and for those that don’t know what that means, it’s a look, code of conduct, and a sense of class we have to win with. In other words, there is no excuse for bad quality. That’s the SWAVE way!
How do you define success?
Success is meeting every goal you set whether it is micro or macro goals just make sure you meet your checkpoints and continue to meet them. Chase what you want until you get it and then do not stop until you get it all! If they won’t give you a seat at the table build your own!
