Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Rusher
Morgan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began sewing at the tender age of 12, originally taught by my late grandmother Geraldine Edwards. My passions for Barbie and clothes collided into a whirlwind of endless possibilities. As my age increased, so did my curiosity in fashion. I’d walk around in my mom’s shoes and clothes, imagining I was on the world’s biggest runway. That passion led me into modeling. I began modeling at age 13 and was later granted a contract. By high school, I was making my very own customized outfits and began making and selling ripped denim jeans. During my senior year, I realized this was my God-given talent. I took a designing course where I was able to display my creative talents. While everyone else in my class was coming up with their plans for college and career choices, I was still wondering where my chips would fall. One of my final assignments was to construct a garment from newspaper. This assignment led to a passing grade and having a visitor from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Merchandising & Design). I received an offer, due to financial reasonings I had to decline the offer. Shortly after I applied for the Art Institute of Houston as a fashion major where I was accepted and continued to pursue my knowledge in design. I finally launched my brand, The Moe Monroe Brand, in 2017, and since then, have been displayed in Houston, as well as New York and Atlanta Fashion Week. On March 26, 2024 I made the sole decision to go full time to invest into my craft wholeheartedly.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has not been by far the smoothest. I’ve lost many friends and loved ones to gun violence and illness. Grief changes you, the many sacrifices that I’ve made to get here costed me relationships, friendships, and situations that jeopardized me into being anyone other than ME. While at times you may miss the previous version(s) of yourself, you have to remember where you are now and the growth that has incurred. You must be willing to release what you’re comfortable with to walk into what and who God has called you to be. I realized I couldn’t be everywhere doing everything. I have a purpose to fulfill, and if I want this, I HAVE TO BE DISCIPLINED. Honestly speaking, everyone doesn’t believe in what you’re building, so you have to believe in yourself more than anyone else!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a fashion designer, wardrobe stylist, and creative director. I typically enjoy working with unconventional items, items that you would never think to wear on the streets. I’m most known for my wearable art pieces. I’m seeking to build exclusivity within my brand to provide 1/1 experiences to each client. I don’t believe in mass production. When it’s genuine, true art and fashion can’t be duplicated.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned on this journey is to KEEP GOING. Pray when it gets hard, and keep pushing. Be mindful of who you dream to… don’t tell everyone what you’re doing, and how you plan to do it. Write it down and hold it close to you, that way you can protect what you’re building in peace.
