Check Out Brett Robinson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Robinson

Hi Brett, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Brett Robinson, and I am running for State Representative District 130. I have lived in the Cypress area for fifteen years, ever since I was nine years old. When my family moved here, our home was brand new and one of the only houses in the neighborhood. As I grew up in the community, I saw it develop with me as well. I care deeply about my community and I am passionate about public policy for its power to improve day-to-day lives. In my free time, I love to solve puzzles like crosswords, picross, and hidato. For me, the joy I find in solving puzzles can also be found in discovering solutions to policy problems.

I just recently earned my Masters in Public Administration from the University of Houston May 2024. During my college career, I was heavily involved on campus. I served as Undergraduate At-Large Senator, Cub Camp Counselor and Co-Chair, and UH Democrats Vice President.

I decided to run for State Representative after I saw that my opponent went unchallenged in the last election cycle. He is one of the co-authors of the abortion ban in Texas, which provides no exception for rape or incest. I am honored to have the opportunity to represent my community, and to be working towards restoring our reproductive freedom and protecting our public schools.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running for office has had its challenges, but I knew it would be difficult. For one, I did not know where to start, so I relied on mentorship to point me in the right direction. I spoke with the last Democrat to run for this seat, and I attended a campaign workshop. These meetings helped me to put together a plan and course of action. Since then, my main challenge has been deciding how to spend my time. Every campaign will look different as they decide for themselves their schedule. But it is tough to balance blockwalking, call time, special events, social media, and everything else going on in your life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I recently graduated from the UH Masters in Public Administration program, which equipped me with core skills in areas such as public management, public budgeting, and policy implementation, but my favorite activity is using data analysis to craft solutions for policy problems. I also love talking politics and making Tiktoks about current events on the state and federal level.

Before I was a candidate, I was a Field Organizer Fellow for the Adrian Garcia campaign. I knocked doors, called voters, and cut turf. It was a pleasant learning experience that taught me more about myself. This was the first campaign I worked for, and it is where I discovered that I loved community organizing and campaigning.

What matters most to you? Why?
I care about the example we are setting as a community and I want the next generation to have more opportunities than I had. Right now, I believe our elected leaders are not faithfully representing us, especially on a state level. There was a federal program passed by Congress and President Biden that would have provided free meals to low-income students over the summer. However, states had to opt in to the program. Texas and 14 other states, all led by Republican Governors, chose not to opt in. We need to address this cruelty with the urgency it deserves, which is why I also love encouraging new people to involve themselves in the political process. This includes not just doing their own research and voting, but also protesting and running for office as well.
