Meet Matthew Reeves of Reeves Antiques in Montrose Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Reeves.

Matthew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My father (who is still helping run the business) worked his way into running one of Houston’s oldest and well known Antique Stores. I grew up in the store around furniture and art my whole childhood. I thought for sure I was going to be a lawyer or something far removed from the business. I college I wanted some cool furniture to go in my apartment however the heavy antiques in our store didn’t fit the vibe. I started searching for pieces with a more edgy modern design. Once my apartment was complete I leapt buying furniture and art and was soon overloaded and decided to try and sell some in the Antique store. The furniture sold quickly, I made some fast money and was hooked! After lots of convincing my trusting Dad worked with me to liquidate all of the antiques and start fresh. We started collecting wonderful examples of high design and the rest is history!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road was covered in potholes and sharp turns! Transitioning from traditional antiques into a more clean design shocked a lot of our long-time customers. It has since come full circle and we do a lot of business with them!

Reeves Antiques – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I like to think of us as selling great design from all periods, styles, and places. If it’s well made, interesting, and unique we want it. Our specialty however would be modernism (20th century designs) and fine art. I am most proud of being in business for almost 50 years. We keep our inventory fresh and exciting. It’s ever-changing. Our art selection is something that sets apart. We have around 800 paintings in our inventory to select from.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I don’t believe success is business related personally. Success for me would lie in realm of happiness and following your dreams. Although my business does make me happy, so I guess that would make it successful!
