Meet Jana and Robert Salyers of Southern BOI Cafe in South East

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana and Robert Salyers.

Jana and Robert, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We are a family business that started out as a little catering company doing some parties, wedding and we had found a little niche market in our area with providing some meal prep for busy families who wanted home cooked meals, but did not have the time to make that work. Seven months after starting our business, we had the opportunity to expand into our modest sized café that can seat up to 30. After a build out, that took a couple of months (and was done by us and our amazing family), we finally opened our doors.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Well, there have been many speed bumps along the way but we prayed and left things in God’s hands and we were able to navigate the storm as smooth as can be.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Southern BOI Cafe story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a family owned and operated Gulf Coast Regional cuisine. We specialize in Southern food recipes that have some Mexican and Cajun twists. Our food is influenced by both our childhood experiences and family recipes. We are known for our chicken fried chicken, shrimp and grits and banana pudding. We are most proud that we are able to be open with our Christianity. We are closed on Sundays to allow our staff to be able to attend church (if that is what they would like to do), or just have a day to relax with their family and friends.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck to us is being able to hit all green lights on the way into work! We try not to leave things to “luck”. We are strong in our faith and prefer just to put our trust in God and let Him work out the details. He hasn’t failed us yet!
