Daily Inspiration: Meet Desz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desz.

Hi Desz, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From my early age, I had a gift and my mother knew I had this gift and we would sing together. One song in particular was who holds tomorrow by Kelly Price, she made me learn and made me promise if she were to pass that I would honor her by singing that song. Unfortunately, at the age of 11 she did pass on, and I honored her by singing that song at her service. Moving forward, my relationship with music was a struggle. Although listening to it was therapeutic singing publicly was, not therapeutic lol. For a long time, I felt a constant painting. Reminder of the first time I sang in front of people was her funeral. I still did school choir and community choir but soloing wasn’t my focus. Fast forwarding through life I received the scholarship for Musiq to preview A&M University and quickly had to get out of my fear of solo singing because I received a scholarship for Musiq and had no other choice. There I received training, but it wasn’t my hardest desire. I will leave the campus on the weekend and drive to Houston to listen to music at the local clubs and lounges. One day I must have the courage to do an open mic. Believe it or not, it was not the greatest experience nor the greatest performance lol but I had a familiar feeling and as an adult was able to process it differently and found a passion within it. From that moment, I was in all the open mic singing background for gas money for all the local artist until I made the decision to become my own. In 2019 I moved to Los Angeles with no money and I hoping a prayer did one audition and ended up in Kanye West Sunday Service. Made a lot of connections the opportunity open doors for me to be on The Voice and other national syndicated shows.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
from the outside, looking in, it may seem like my journey could’ve been smooth, but in reality as an artist, I am human first and so life happens to us all. My life in Houston, Texas to move to Los Angeles, being pennyless, sleeping on my cousins floor, on government assistance, those things some people don’t talk about. I have faith in God that I would make it and I did. Was afforded a grand opportunity to sing in Sunday Service with Kanye West. There was a pandemic, which brought a lot of worries for people in the entertainment industry because we didn’t know what the world would look likeus. But I prayed and have faith and I ended up on The Voice during a pandemic so in short physically the road looks smooth emotionally. It has not been easy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I classified myself as an artist! I am first and foremost, a musician specialty In voice. But all around creative the thing I am most proud of is my authenticity, which is something I think sets me apart. I’m not trying to be like anyone else. I truly just want to be accepted for who I am.

What are your plans for the future?
My future plans I am excited to release a full body of work, my first project! I want the world to be able to experience self-conscious being.
