Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Hoang.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
JEM Events, a grassroots business, is named after my daughters, Jordyn and Emily. I have always looked forward to planning the girls’ birthdays and hosting gatherings/ special occasions for family and friends. I absolutely love party planning from coordinating the food and dessert menus, crafting tablescape décor, to setting up the buffet spread. Not to mention the joy and lasting memories shared at each event that make it all the more rewarding.
About 3 years back, I hosted a shower for a dear friend, shared some photos on social media and just like that, JEM’s first hired event was booked. It has been a crazy fun whirlwind of events these past few years as I continue to juggle work and family full time while growing the business. I am truly grateful for amazing family, friends, and clients who support me as I continue to pursue my passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The main struggle has been juggling everything: family, a full time job and events. Of course, my family is always priority. As the girls grow older, I realize time with our children is limited. Jordyn is turning 13 and will be off to college before I know it. Emmy started Kindergarten last August in the blink of an eye. She was only a baby when I first decided to pursue JEM- it is unbelievable how fast time flies. I have worked out a schedule so that I can pick up the girls from school every day and take them to all their extracurricular. I am extremely grateful that my company provides great work life balance and a more flexible schedule; hence I cannot leave the corporate life behind just yet. As hectic as it can be to juggle everything, JEM somehow keeps me sane through it all, my therapy if you will. Although I may break from events at times, the goal is to eventually make it a full time job. It can be a struggle, but for now I have my cake and am eating it too.

JEM Events specializes in custom themed party planning for occasions of all ages. Every event is uniquely designed to clients’ needs and requests. I thoroughly enjoy every part of the creative process as well as working with clients to bring their visions to life. JEM takes pride in planning every last detail to provide an unforgettable and exciting event for our hosts and their guests.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Passion. It can be overwhelming at times with the back – to- back events. I constantly switch gears, accounting by day and events by night, as my full time position is financial reporting in Oil and Gas. Without passion, I wouldn’t have that drive and determination needed in order to bring visions and goals to fruition.
