Today we’d like to introduce you to Deshawn Steele.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Absolutely. My photography journey actually started at my church Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church. I was invited to join the photography ministry, which was led by Alma Hicks. She was the first person to really show me the ropes and help me see photography as more than just snapping pictures. I bought my very first camera and lens from her, and that’s when everything began.
At first, like most beginners, I was shooting in automatic mode—which, if you know photography, is definitely a no, lol. But I stuck with it and taught myself how to shoot in manual, learning how to actually control the camera and craft an image.
From there, I started tagging along on graduation shoots with Andre Williams. He was incredibly helpful in showing me how to pose clients, use natural light, and just navigate a session with confidence. Then once I started shooting weddings, my homie Elgin stepped in and really helped me level up. He taught me how to think ahead, anticipate moments, and tell a full story through photos.
What started in the church grew into something much bigger than I ever imagined. Now I run Shots by Shawn Photography and Amora Weddings & Films, and I’ve had the honor of photographing everything from weddings and graduations to corporate events and creative portraits. But no matter how far I go, I’ll never forget where it started—at church, with a camera I bought from someone who believed in me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but it’s been worth it.
When I first started, I didn’t have all the equipment I needed, and I couldn’t always afford the latest gear. I made the most of what I had, but there were moments when I felt like I wasn’t keeping up with other photographers who had more resources.
There were also times where I doubted myself—especially in the early days when I was still learning. I remember doing shoots where I’d get home, look at the photos, and realize I completely missed the mark. It was humbling. But every mistake pushed me to study harder and improve.
Balancing photography with real life was another challenge. I’ve had to juggle working full-time, being in school, and still finding time to pour into my business. There were nights where I was editing photos at 2 or 3 in the morning just to stay on schedule.
I’ve also dealt with late payments, overextending myself trying to be “nice,” and even being treated unfairly at some events. All of that taught me the importance of setting boundaries, creating clear systems, and valuing my time and work.
But every challenge has shaped me. It’s made me more resilient, more resourceful, and more focused on building a business that reflects excellence and heart.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in wedding photography, and that’s where my heart really lies. While I started off capturing everything from graduation shoots to birthday parties, weddings pulled me in because of the emotion, storytelling, and once-in-a-lifetime moments that happen throughout the day. There’s something deeply fulfilling about knowing the images I create will be passed down for generations.
What sets me apart is that I never do this alone. From the very beginning, I’ve believed in the power of teamwork. I bring a team with me to every wedding—second shooters, assistants, videographers—all of us working together to make sure nothing is missed and everything flows smoothly. That team effort creates a better experience for our couples and helps us deliver consistently high-quality work.
I’m also proud to offer something unique with our How We Met mini-documentary sessions. These are short films that tell a couple’s love story in their own words—how they met, what they’ve been through, and why they’re choosing forever together. It’s a deeply personal touch that adds even more meaning to their wedding day, and it’s become one of our most loved offerings.
Through all of this, I’ve built Amora Weddings & Films, a brand under Shots by Shawn Photography that focuses solely on weddings and love stories. We recently opened a studio space right here in Houston, which has given us the ability to host consultations, styled shoots, and work with clients in a more creative, controlled environment. It’s been a huge milestone and one I’m incredibly proud of.
At the end of the day, I’m not just capturing a ceremony—I’m telling a love story. And with my team by my side, we’re able to tell it in a way that’s thoughtful, emotional, and unforgettable.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Absolutely. My biggest advice for anyone just starting out is this: don’t be afraid to start small, but make sure you start. You don’t need the best camera or the perfect setup. Use what you have, learn everything you can, and grow from there. I started out shooting in auto mode at church—and now I’m running a full wedding brand and studio.
I wish someone had told me earlier how important it is to build systems and protect your time. When you first start, you’ll want to say yes to everything and everyone, but not every opportunity is the right one. Set boundaries. Create contracts. Value your time and your talent, even when others don’t see it yet.
Also—community matters. I didn’t get here alone. I learned from people like Alma Hicks, Andre Williams, and Elgin Whavers. So find people who are willing to teach, and be humble enough to learn. And when it’s your turn, give that knowledge back.
Lastly, don’t rush the process. Growth takes time. Mistakes will happen. You’re going to miss shots, lose files, have clients who doubt you—but keep going. If you stay consistent and stay true to your vision, you’ll look up one day and realize you’re walking in the very thing you once prayed for.
