Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Regina Rowland of Downtown

We recently had the chance to connect with Regina Rowland and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Regina, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day are all about grounding myself before the world starts calling. I start with a big glass of water and a few quiet moments of gratitude, just to set the tone. Then I do some gentle stretches and vocal warm-ups—nothing too intense, just enough to wake up my body and voice. I like to make a cup of tea and either journal or listen to music that inspires me, depending on what I’m feeling that morning. Those first moments are sacred for me—they’re where I align my mind, my spirit, and my creativity before stepping into the rest of the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Regina Jazz, a vocalist with over 20 years of experience, blending the rich tradition of jazz with my own soulful storytelling. My brand is all about creating intimate, emotive musical moments—whether I’m performing timeless standards or original music. I’m passionate about connecting with audiences in a way that feels personal, like we’re all sharing the same story in real time. Right now, I’m working on new music that fuses classic jazz sensibilities with fresh, modern touches, while also performing at venues that appreciate the art of live, heartfelt music.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was a curious, fearless girl who sang just because it made my heart light. I moved through life with wonder, not worrying about fitting into anyone’s mold. I created, I dreamed, and I spoke my truth without overthinking how it would be received. That pure, unfiltered version of me still lives inside—I just protect her more carefully now.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that’s held me back the most has been the fear of being fully seen—of showing every part of myself, flaws and all. For a long time, I worried that if I let people see the real me, they might not accept it. But I’ve learned that vulnerability is where true connection happens, and the more I lean into it, the freer I feel.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say what really matters to me is genuine connection—whether it’s through music, conversation, or shared experiences. They’d tell you I care deeply about people feeling seen, valued, and inspired, and that I pour my heart into the things and relationships that matter most.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I lived with passion, led with love, and left every person I met feeling a little more seen and valued. That I used my voice—not just to sing, but to uplift, inspire, and tell the truth. And that I didn’t just chase dreams, I created spaces for others to dream too.
