We recently had the chance to connect with Barbara Mexis and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Barbara , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
It’s a pleasure being here today! It’s easy to think of it as “just balloons,” but it’s so much more. It embodies creativity, consulting, and transforming chaos into order—all packaged and delivered for the client. This service takes an already meaningful occasion and elevates it to new heights. Events such as birthdays, anniversaries, and baby showers can be fully customized, with the personal touch adding that extra sparkle.
Many consumers browsing the industry may perceive it as too pricey, but what you truly invest in is peace of mind, efficiency, and a beautifully crafted event. By hiring me, clients alleviate some of the anxiety and overwhelm that naturally accompany event hosting. This service is designed to help hosts and their loved ones maintain their sanity, and it’s not exclusively for large gatherings; intimate events can also benefit. Columns, stacks, and bouquets can enhance smaller occasions, elevating both the photographs and the cherished memories.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Of course, I am a single mom navigating life’s challenges. Alongside organizing stunning events, I hold a full-time position at Houston’s largest hospital system and pursue my studies part-time. I am just one semester away from earning my Bachelor’s degree in General Business from UHD. My parents are both immigrants; my father hails from Greece, while my mother is from the Philippines.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The saying “Yes” season of my life is finished. This chapter of my life has closed, and I’m ready to embrace what comes next. I’ve faced my share of challenges—some are the typical lessons life throws at us, while others were uniquely tough and ones I hope nobody else has to endure. I don’t see myself as a victim; I’ve been through difficult times, but I’ve managed to find my way through them. I used to say yes to every request, no matter how inconvenient or challenging it was.
I suppose I was searching for acceptance, but I’ve come to realize that I’m the one who picks myself up after every fall. I’m the architect of my own life. So, I’ve decided to stop saying yes to things that drain my energy. I will always be there for my community and do my best to help my friends, but I’m done saying yes just to seek approval. You can accept me for who I am, or not; either way, my journey continues.
Change has always been intimidating for me; however, as I reflect on my life, I realize that each period of struggle has merely been a transition to my next blessing. I no longer fear change; instead, I eagerly anticipate it.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Enduring hardship has instilled in me a profound appreciation for life. I’ve come to cherish the little things and the small acts of kindness that come my way. This journey has taught me to make the most of what I have as I strive toward my dreams. While silent suffering isn’t the path for everyone, it has endowed me with a unique strength and resilience. At just 18, I ventured out on my own, taking full responsibility for maintaining a home, first for myself and later for my daughter as well. Even when life becomes tumultuous, I’ve learned that I must rise and face each day’s challenges head-on—there truly is no other choice.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I once believed that love could conquer all, but I’ve learned that it’s loyalty that truly matters. In every kind of relationship, love may not always bring the support you need, and that’s okay. It’s the loyal ones who stand by you through both triumphs and challenges. I also thought having more friends signified being valued, but I’ve discovered that a small, close-knit group offers greater peace and genuine appreciation. This realization has been a journey towards deeper, more meaningful connections.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely! Even when I’m assigned a task I’m not particularly fond of, I always strive to give my best effort. I refuse to associate my name with anything mediocre. I take pride in the work I produce.
