We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lydia Lomelín. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Lydia, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What is a normal day like for you right now?
Lately, since my daughters are on summer break, I wake up around 8 a.m. I’m definitely not an early bird, but I get up to make breakfast for us, and then I sit down with my coffee. That’s my moment! nothing can disturb me while I’m drinking it.
Once I finish my coffee, I start getting into work mode. I clean up the house, answer emails, place orders for kitchen supplies, plan social media posts, and manage the website. If it’s Monday, I also start working on the new menu to post on Tuesday. Around 3:30 p.m., my husband gets home, and we eat lunch together. After that, I usually head out to Pilates and then run any errands I need to take care of.
In the evenings, I come home, spend time with my family, and wind down. That’s a pretty normal day unless it’s Thursday through Sunday. That’s when the chaos hits with all the cooking and deliveries.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi! I’m Lydia Lomelin, and together with my husband, we own Magnolia Prep a meal prep company based in Houston, Texas, born from our love for food and living a healthy lifestyle. I studied culinary arts and have always had a deep passion for cooking, so when we created Magnolia Prep, I wanted it to feel different from the typical meal prep service. For me, it was important to combine flavor, creativity, and nutrition into something that felt personal and exciting not boring or repetitive.
Right now, we’re really focused on listening to our clients! what they love, what they need, and what they’d like to see next. We just launched our new bulk plans, which were highly requested, and we’re so excited to finally make them available. Our goal is to keep evolving based on our community’s feedback and continue building a business that our customers truly love and feel part of.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad taught me everything I know about work. He’s still one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever known. He was the hardest working man I’ve ever met, and I have so many good memories with him. When he married my mom, he moved to a new city where he didn’t know anyone and started his own company from scratch. He built something really successful through sheer determination and hard work, even while battling Parkinson’s disease later in life.
Growing up with a father like that shaped the way I see work. From a young age, I knew I wanted to build something of my own and that it was possible if I gave it my all. I’ve always dreamed big, and I never wanted to feel stuck in a job I didn’t love. I think that mindset comes directly from watching my dad lead by example.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Honestly sometimes I still feel like giving up, haha. There are moments when it all feels overwhelming. Running a business means juggling so many things at once, and as an owner, you want everything to be perfect! the food, the service, the overall experience. You want your customers to love everything. But I’ve learned that perfection is hard to reach, and trying to chase it all the time can be exhausting.
I’m still learning to let go of that pressure and remind myself that no one is perfect. What matters most is staying consistent, doing your best, and being proud of how far you’ve come even on the tough days.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I try to be as real as I can with the people around me and with my friends. I don’t like to pretend or put on a version of myself that isn’t genuine. But at the same time, I feel like the real me is someone only I truly know. There are parts of myself that are just for me, and I think that’s okay.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m cooking by myself with good music blasting. It’s like my therapy! I get in the zone and everything else fades away. I feel peace as well when I’m spending time with my daughters, just talking with them and getting to know them as little human beings. Hearing how they think and seeing who they’re becoming brings me so much calm and joy.
