Kevin Johnson Sr. shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kevin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes, in the last few months I have added more cookoff awards to the collection.
It’s a very proud feeling.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kevin Jerome Johnson SR.
I specialize in smoked meat /BBQ catering.
I have catered for as little as 30 people to 400 people being the most.
I have awards in brisket, chicken and ribs.
I take pride in doing it and I love doing it, as I said in my first interview I come from a BBQ background. What makes me different is I do things the way I want to,
people always picture the guy on the BBQ pit or grill to be elderly and in sandals.
Those days are gone we in cowboy boots or Jordan’s.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me about work.
Growing up we was always cuttings yards for extra money. My father would let me go work with his friends who had small businesses. I would either be painting or laying tile, some Saturdays when most kids are watching cartoons I was with my daddy in the country working on the fence ,feeding cattle or loading watermelons up from the fields. I was blessed to also have 2 uncles I watched with a good work ethic. I appreciate my daddy and uncles today.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t take your time for granted and listen to your elders ,they have already been through everything.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My mother.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes , when its my calling to leave this earth I know I went out trying to leave a legacy.
