We recently had the chance to connect with Erin Watson-Denson and have shared our conversation below.
Erin, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently launched a new business while also elevating my current one, all while being a stay-at-home wife and mom to my beautiful family.
Interestingly, some people think I’m crazy for pursuing my dreams while building the family I feel so blessed to have. But the question is, why not?
Why can’t I be an incredible woman, wife, mom, and successful business owner all at the same time? We only get one life to live out our wildest dreams, so why not make the most of it now?
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Erin! I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO, where I spent countless days surrounded by entrepreneurship in my family’s businesses. My dad’s barber colleges and shops, my grandma’s floral shop, and my mom and uncles’ restaurants. Those early experiences planted the seeds of my love for all things beauty and design.
That passion inspired me to open my two “babies”: Wigs by Erin Monae, LLC and Oasis Interior Designs, LLC.
After graduating from Prairie View A&M University, I launched WigsByErinMonae.co, specializing in premium-quality, custom wig units with a focus on raw HD lace closure wigs. Later, I took a step back from the business world to focus on my most important role, wife and mother. That season of life opened my heart in new ways and reshaped how I approach everything I do.
Coming back from that break, I embraced my creativity again and launched my second business, Oasis Interior Designs, LLC, a virtual interior design studio that helps clients everywhere bring their dream spaces to life. We provide customized, budget-friendly design plans, complete with mood boards, 3D renderings, curated shopping lists, and paint color palettes. Making professional design accessible without the high cost or in-person hassle.
Although my ventures keep me busy, I know my journey is just beginning. I’m passionate about creating, inspiring, and serving, and I believe I’m far from done with what I’m called to do.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
One of my earliest memories of feeling powerful was in my grandma’s floral shop. I couldn’t have been more than seven, but she let me arrange a small bouquet all on my own. When a customer chose my bouquet and paid for it, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, something I created has value.’ In that moment, I felt capable, creative, and like I had a place in the world of business and beauty.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of other people’s assumptions about me has held me back in the past. However, ever since I turned 30, I’ve developed a sense of “I don’t care.” I don’t care who sees me fail, I don’t care who sees me start over, and I don’t care if my success makes others feel uncomfortable. The fear of what others think will no longer hold me back from living life boldly.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A project and goal I am committed to achieving is giving my husband the opportunity to leave his 9-to-5 job. Since I met him, he has always provided for and cared for others, even when he had very little to give. I would love the chance to invest in him and his dreams. This change would give him the freedom to have more time and be more present in our children’s lives as they grow.
Additionally, it would allow him to explore his most creative side and potentially turn a hobby into a successful business.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Over the past year, I have come to a deep understanding that if you don’t take care of yourself, nothing else can be truly cared for. Once you prioritize your physical and mental health, everything else will fall into place. The energy you cultivate will radiate from you and positively impact those you care for, whether in your relationships, your business, or life in general.
Take care of yourself so you can show up as your best self every time.
