We recently had the chance to connect with Jarmal Burton and have shared our conversation below.
Jarmal , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: When was the last time you felt true joy?
I feel joy every morning God allows me to get out of bed and see another day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jarmal Burton also known by comedian Mal Mallucci. Originally from New Orleans, La I’m a writer, actor, director, and comedian and most importantly a Father. I been in the comedy business for 12 years now I’ve performed with some amazing comedians over the years. I’m apart of a comedy group called “The BDE Boyz” along side Comedian JB, Charlee Jr and Eddie Green. We are touring with none other than the very funny Bubba Dub who started and is the leader of the group. Along with my comedy I’ve written 3 books “Dear God it’s written” you can find it on Amazon, and “Love from different views”, and “This is why I can’t have nice things” are on Barnes and Nobles.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My Mother Cheryl Pichon I use to watch my mom everyday go to work day in and day out rain, sleet, snow. She was a housekeeper at an apartment complex I could remember her catching the bus and seeing her walking up the street to come home everyday because we didn’t have a car. My mother was definition of hard work to me we struggled but she made sure we didn’t know we were struggling because she found ways to make it better for us as kids. Now that I’m an adult with Kids I realize all the hard work she did for us to achieve goals and get to where we are today.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Plenty of times I’ve been down before in comedy but that’s part of it. I remember a time I was ready to quit and I made my mind up and said I was done and my phone rung and Bubba Dub called me and told me in a calm voice “Hey Mal Dallas Next Week” at that point I couldn’t quit because my bro was relying on me to show up and my loyalty wouldn’t let me quit on him.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’m me everyday when fans see me in the streets I’m approachable as well as at the shows. I can’t look down on anyone because of how I was raised… I’m nothing without the people who are fans of mine. PLUS I enjoy the love
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was a good man and amazing person to whomever came across me. People will have different views of me but I just hope the people who misunderstood me get an understanding of who I was from the people who understand me. That’s it
