Nikki Berry shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Nikki, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I am for sure walking a path of inspiration and healing. I began walking this path for myself and now have evolved into sharing my experiences to invoke inspiration and healing for others. Recognizing that life is a journey we must continue walking is first and foremost; but when you embrace everyday with abundant expectations, you can truly live a fulfilled life!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Nikki Berry was born in Ville Platte LA.; however, her musical journey began in Beaumont, TX. It was there that she developed her musical talents and interests at the Pleasant Green Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor James C. Franklin. She began leading songs at a very young age, and with the coaching of director Bonnie Williams, her voice began to evolve into something special. She was well known for her singing all over town and was named most talented of her graduating class of West Brook Senior High School.
After graduating high school, Nikki attended Prairie View A&M University and graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. She then moved to Houston, TX. and that became her new home. Nikki has worked for major Engineering companies in the Houston area but has never lost her love for music. She also received an Associates Degree In Theology from the Koinonia College of Biblical Studies. Nikki began writing music in 2008 after experiencing some difficult times in her life. Her music encouraged her to push through and never stop trusting in God; so, she decided it was time to encourage others!
The development of her unique style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in church as an active choir member and praise and worship leader meant that Nikki was always surrounded by Christian and Gospel music.
Her single “Show Me Your Glory” has graced the Billboard Indicator and Sales Charts, leading the way for her singles entitled “Higher”, “Restore”, Grace & Mercy, “1-2 Punch” & “Shine On Me” to all be chart topping hits! Nikki is a multi-talented artist, who is a singer, songwriter, actress, and red carpet/TV host. She is also a businesswoman who created the Nikki Berry Music inspiration line of gifts and apparel; which includes The Restoration Line of Candles.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I played Harriet Tubman in a third grade black history program at Blanchette Elementary School in Beaumont, Texas. I studied her character by watching VHS tapes of movies about her life that my mom rented from the public library. When I got on stage it’s like I became her and I felt so free and empowered. The crowd cheered in a standing ovation and my teacher Mrs. Wright applauded in tears; as she had no idea I would bring so much heart and emotion to the role. I believe this was when I knew acting was a true passion of mine.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say you are enough. You are smart enough, you are pretty enough and you are worth everything you desire in life!
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I would say people. They really matter to me; because I have a heart for people and making their lives better. It matters to me how people feel when they are in my presence and that they take away something positive and empowering when they leave my presence. My closest friends embrace this practice as well; because we are aligned with fulfilling the purpose of building others up and pushing them to see all of the beautiful things and people in their lives.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely Yes! I take pride in giving my best in everything I do. I like to think that if I can’t do it in excellence I shouldn’t do it at this time. How we execute things resembles our character and level of respect for ourselves and others. If no one ever praised me for the things I do, I know in my heart what I gave to the project. I can feel good about the efforts I put into it; because being honest with myself should be what I’m striving for before praise from people.
