We’re looking forward to introducing you to Deon Brooks. Check out our conversation below.
Deon, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
My day usually starts off with a work out. After that, I head to my office or to the job sight to oversea construction.
Usually 12 – 14 hour work day, then I spend time with my 2 daughters.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Deon Brooks. I am the owner of Third Coast Environmental Service, were we collect public drinking water samples for the TCEQ. I’ve been in business for 18 years. I’m also 50% owner of Eastbrook Business Center, were we lease commercial spaces. My newest venture is a motel in a rural Texas town called Normangee. What makes Stay Palms unique is our lavish, themed rooms. We are the only lodging facility in the town. Our goal is is to provide a clean, safe, and fun experience for all of our guest. We also plan to offer vacation packages filled with the best country experiences imaginable.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when i was 10 years old. I saw a man with a pile of dirt in his yard and ask him if I could help spread it for money. He said yes, and I closed my first business deal. After that, I continued looking for ways to make money.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There has been times I thought about giving up on my Motel. Having multiple businesses, you start to second guess yourself about if you have the time for another one. Or you start to listen to all the critics about how your idea is not going to work. Then i think about all the time and research that has went into this project, and it gets me back on track.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I rely on my ex wife, now best friend’s advice other than my own. She is very smart and the most trust worty person I know. I also have friends that own businesses. We’re able to bounce ideas off each other. Always good to have a support group.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am definently doing what I was born to do. I was told that I wouldn’t amount to much as a kid. I realized I wanted to be a business man at an early age. The main reason was because I didn’t like how most employers handled their employees. I believe that everyone in the work place, should be treated with respect. I have the heart of a teacher so it makes it easy to communicate with my team.
