Yusselly Garcia-Coronado shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Yusselly , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People usually think being a cosmetologist is an easy and unintelligent job. In reality there is a whole lot more than “just being a hairstylist or makeup artist”. It is a very demanding job, it can be physically and emotionally draining sometimes, because we’re not only on our feet for long hours while doing repetitive arm and wrist movements. We are also building a relationship with our clients, listening to them share the great stuff going on in their lives, or vent and pour out their feelings. Another misconception would be our knowledge, as some people think “it’s just color, a hair mask, or a makeup application, anybody can do that. Yes anybody can do it, but in reality, there’s a lot more to it than applying hair color, a bang trim, and doing someone’s makeup. It’s chemistry, color theory, dermatology, trichology, geometry, fractions, and sanitation.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello Hidden Gems readers! My name is Yusselly Garcia-Coronado, proud latina and owner of Aztec Beauty. I am a licensed cosmetologist, hairstylist, and certified professional masters makeup artist. My specialty is hair styling and makeup for special events such as weddings, quinceañeras, photography and fashion shows, as well as color and cuts. My goal is to make sure every guest feels comfortable and relaxed while they’re in my chair.
I love enhancing everyone’s beauty with my talent and hope to fulfill everyone’s expectations every time they book with me.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Growing up I was a big people-pleaser. I believed I needed to be liked by everyone and have everyone’s aproval to fit in and be the best version of myself. I was clearly wrong about that and it’s something that I have learned over time. Working in the beauty industry has taught me not just as a stylist/MUA, but also as a person, that I am not for everyone. Not everyone will like my work and I am perfectly fine with it. My work and personality will attract the right clients that fit my style just how I fit their’s. They are the one’s I will please by bringing their vision to life.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
All the time! It’s not easy trying to keep some balance in my life, between being a mom, wife, business owner, while also trying to have some time for my self. It can be exhausting sometimes but when I look back at how far I’ve come, how much closer I am to living my dream, and most importantly who I am doing it for, I know giving up is not an option.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Growing up in a hispanic household, we have a lot of cultural values. I wouldn’t be able to choose just one, but familismo, heritage, generosity, and staying humble are definitely the most important to me. Family is very important to me, I would always put my family first before anything. I love my heritage, I am very proud of being a Mexican American. Being able to fluently speak both Spanish and English is truly a blessing. My parents taught me to always be humble, kind, and generous with everyone and never expect anything back. And like my Abuelita once told me “good things happen to good people, you don’s always win but when you do things with good intentions, better things come back to you”.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
Probably my stories. My clients know I always have some crazy stories to talk about, and they usually start with one story but then I get side tracked with 3 different stories that are relevant somehow. I stay pretty busy, I’m usually juggling with working at the salon, special events, photoshoots, being a mom and wife. Not to mention my family and I usually have a party or something going on and if we don’t we find a reason to get together. So I guess we can say I keep them entertained with my chaotic stories.
