Story & Lesson Highlights with Jennifer Devine of Sugar Land

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jennifer Devine. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Jennifer, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often think accounting is all about math, but that is not really the case. Accounting is more about logic and understanding how the pieces fit together. The math itself is simple, but the value comes from interpreting what the numbers mean. In the end, accounting tells the story of a business, and my job is to make sure the numbers clearly reflect that story.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jennifer Devine and I’m the founder of Devine Consulting.
We provide outsourced accounting for businesses that want their financials to not only be accurate but organized and stress-free. After spending 25 years in accounting and software, I saw a chance to combine those skills to help clients see the full picture behind their numbers. What makes our firm different is how deeply we invest in our clients’ success; We look beyond the numbers to understand how their business works and create processes and integrate technology to bring clarity and confidence to their finances. Seeing clients gain control and peace of mind over their business is the most rewarding part of what I do.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A defining moment for me was realizing that I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. After graduating college I constantly found myself thinking about ways to build something of my own, from opening a daycare when my children were young to exploring the idea of a gymnastics facility. Each idea taught me valuable lessons about creativity and perseverance. Although none of those ventures materialized, the process shaped how I view opportunities and challenges. It ultimately led me to start my accounting business where my passion and experience came together with real purpose.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Owning a business is a real challenge because you never know what each day will bring. It could be a client who is upset, an employee issue or the internet not working. Sometimes it feels like I’m being a punching bag. There’ve been many times when I wanted to give up but like anything else you just keep putting one foot in front of the other and trust that it will work out. You have to know when to pivot because what seemed like a good idea at the start can quickly stop working.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I try to approach everything with good intent, and that mindset keeps me grounded. I truly care about my clients and my team, and that care guides every decision I make. Sometimes I have to make tough choices that affect people, but I always go into those moments with the best intentions. When someone is upset, it weighs on me even when I know the decision was right. For example letting go of an employee can be something super tough but it can work out best for both parties even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
At the end of the day I want people to say that I treated them fairly. I try not to react in the moment when faced with difficult decisions. I prefer to take time to think through things and handle issues with a clear head. Fairness and level-headed decision-making are what I hope people remember about me.
