We’re looking forward to introducing you to SURFACE GREY. Check out our conversation below.
SURFACE , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Opening for KOTA The Friend and killing my set definitely was the moment that made me feel proud as of late. Also, KOTA came to my crew backstage and introduced himself it was real genuine and authentic interaction so I def loved that it wasn’t anything forced or not just pure positive energy flowing at full force.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, I am SURFACE GREY, and I’m just one of many in the dopest collective out right now KND (abbreviated for) KREATIVITYNEXTDOOR. We are based out of the North Houston area and have a unique style with our music combining Neo-Soul (Hip-Hop + RnB) with Alternative, Indie, Electronic, and Jazz.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Trust…. There’s trust in many ways right. Trust in loyalty, if you have a partner you trust they only come back to you at night right? There’s trust in respect too, I once had a friend I trusted to act formal around a person who is a bigger celebrity and they didn’t so they lost my respect. Trust is what breaks bonds between people for sure.
I think love restores bonds like true genuine love can help build back things that were completely torn apart.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
That this life doesn’t stop! Not even when you are successful then comes like your Drake, Future, Kendrick etc. people who have been on top doing this 10-15+ years . When you down at the bottom of the bottom you wish to just have a chance to be at that level on matter the time now though if I do get in my internal problem would be are you hungry enough to stay at that level in which my case as a dedicated music and music lover I would but your person from the trenches may get satisfied who am I to fault them for that, I just know suffering taught me you gotta wait to be GREAT essentially. Even MJ wasn’t the MJ we knew to love just yet in Jackson 5 but you have to make that journey to head down that path way. Thats what I’m on I’ve put in way too much to ever look back now so yeah I’ll suffer even more to be GREAT. Now if we were just talking good ehh that’s another story I don’t want to just be good and have endured all this for that…I WANT TO BE GREAT!!!!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That everyone will be a valued artist. Imma be honest you won’t feel valued sometimes as an artist.
It’s the tough truth, but if you willing to stick through those times you can find those people who do value your art and be able to turn that connection into something bigger.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
The music….
The music is going to always be here. Long after I perish, the editor publishing this perishes, etc. not to get dark or anything lol but at the end of the day we really just got memories and Music. 2Ms
